Discussing "Main Currents in Progressive American Education" in Aud. C, Angell Hall Prof. Filler pointed to the free schools of the Puritans, status given to women and the American Revolution as democratic events that helped de- velop education. He criticized a revivalist demand for the Three R's which he said "will do no more than provide the newest short answer to the prob- lem of American civilization." Traditional Discipline Prof. Filler noted the traditional disciplines of history, literature, philosophy, and religion. "The worst about these disci- plines was that they were essen- tially false and capable of teach- ing nothing but an ignorant and stubborn self-esteem," he declared. "Such education can prepare us for nothing but furthertragedy." Commenting on the effects of the second half of the twentieth century, Prof. Filler said it ended the economic crisis and created an unprecedented demand for practi- cal skills and instruction. Never were the basic disciplines so firmly disciplined than during and after World War II, Prof. Filler asserted. Atomic Warfare He noted that with the shadow of atomic warfare overhead, it was difficult to begin a restudy of American circumstances because of the continued atomization of American purposes and relations. Group dynamics, efficiency ex- perts, and the inter-disciplinary approach to study and research was adopted' to combat these con- ditions, Prof. Filler said. "But we were still in a serious plight. A panicky atmosphere gave strength to the argument that "the villain in the piece was progressive education which had disarmed us in our need," he declared. Basic Disciplines Prof. Filler said basic disciplines cannot be imposed unless society finds ways and means of forcing assimilation and retention of skills. The Soviet Union has found ways and means of doing so for a forceful percentage of her popu- lation, Prof. Filler declared. He suggested that the United States study the Soviet Union's alleged success in scientific rather than sentimental terms. "But even this will not give us insight into our own problem. We are not Russia, and only a futile few of us would wish us to be," he concluded. Prof. Filler's talk was conducted under the auspices of the Univer- sity School of Education and His- tory Department.
