Every time the Wolverines have gone into the finals, they have won. The 2,800 fans who packed the, Broadmoor Ice Palace, site of the playoffs, were mostly from the local surrouundings and rooted for the underdogs from the East against the defending champs. It was thought possible that John Rendall, Michigan sopho- more who was declared ineligible late Thursday, might have been reinstated for last night's con- test, but the faculty representa- tive Marcus Plant ruled that when a Michigan athlete's eligi- bility is questioned, he should be withdrawn from competition. Michigan athletic director H. O. Grsler and faculty representa- tive Marcus Plant yesterday ex- pressed further indecision on the recent- suspensions of three Mich- igan hockey players from NCAA tournament play. Caught by Surprise Crisler told the Daily that the action had caught him complete- ly by surprise and that he was greatly bothered on two points. "First, I'm surprised that they went as long as they did without contacting us," Crisler said. 'Sec- ondly, the action was based on an interpretation thathwas made ret- roactive." In explanation, he added that the main difference between the Big Ten ineligibility ruling of last year and the most recent sus- pension is that the Big Ten rul- ing actually had allowed Michigan to withdraw the athletes from competition on its own. tion to satisfy myself on all as- pects of the matter," he con- tinued. "It is Michigan's policy," Plant went on, "when a question is raised as to the eligibility of one of its players, to withdraw that player from competition, and ac- cordingly, John Rendall will not participate in the tournament." maammen a 1 40 hi. r / J A4 ,;I II II' I for your eating pleasure..
