Legislative action forcing stu- dents to pay for dormitory utili- ties could cause a rate increase of $40 to $50 per student, Pierpont said. There has been some talk of this in Lansing.E Construction Needed Need of additional revenue for new dormitory construction could also produce a rate increase. Pier- pont said interest rates on bonds have been going up "drastically" and Schaadt observed that build- ing costs are continually rising. Financing of the proposed North Campus Residence Halls has not been settled, according to Pierpont. A $50 rate increase two years ago was to get money for new Organization Notices The Contemporary Literature Club, March 18, "1:30 p.m., 3532 Student Acti- vities Building. * * * Wesleyan Guild, St. Pat's Party, March 15, 8:00 p.m., Wesley Lounge. * . * Latvian Students Club, regular monthly meeting, March 17, 7:00 p.m., International Center, Union. * * s Lutheran Student Association, Square Dance at Tappan Junior High School Gym,March 15, 8:00 p.m., meet at the Center. * * * Roger Williams Fellowship, March 15, party, 8:00 p.m., Guild House. Union Bridge Club, duplicate bridge tournament, March 15, 7:30 p.m., Union Residlence Halls. Pierpont also re- marked that obtaining funds to build new dormitories has been the big expense of Residence Hall financing in the past. There has been a steady in- crease in rates over the past sev- eral years. The cost of a double without wash basin has been: School year of 1950-'51: men $566, women $586; '51-'52: men $616, women $626; '52-'53: both $650; '53-'54: $700; '54-'55: $700; '55-'56: $750; '56-'57: $770. Increase Reported When the rate increase was asked last spring it was reported that the men's rates would be 102 per cent higher than 1939 rates and women's rates 921/2 per cent higher. Both Pierpont and Schaadt squashed anynhopedthat pre- dicted doubling-up in the men's dormitories next year would pro- vide extra revenue making a room and board increase unnecessary. They cited these reasons: 1) many costs, such as food and laundry service, remain static; 2) many students now paying double room rates will be paying the low- er triple room rates when doubled- up; 3) cost of furniture and oth- er equipment for the extra stu- dents. Pierpont added that any sur- plus from the doubling-up would be very small and must be used to liquidate the dormitory con- struction bonds. This is part of the written bond agreement, he explained. "The doubling-up in the wo- men's system," Pierpont said, "has created some surplus but it's no great bonanza."~ The University ranks third to Illinois and Northwestern in room and board costs, according to Francis C. Sheil, manager of ser- vice enterprises. ALTERATIONS Dressmaking Tailoring, restyling. Will do fitting in your home or mine. Experienced, minimum charges. NO 5-6370.
