The Student Senate issued a
statement defending Gates' invi-
tation, and calling Garvey's ac-
tion inconsistent with the prin-
ciples of academic freedom.
A number of local veterans and
religious groups had vociferously
objected to Gates' appearance. The
Queens County commander of the
American Legion told The Ram-
part "city colleges should not be a
rostrum for convicted Commun-
ists."
