This sect allegedly reads between, around and underneath the lines of print on the nation's sports pages. Significant facts bore them; large type repels them. May be that there is such a Cult of the Insignificant. Press re- leases sent us by the nation's sports publicity departments tend to support this contention. While these publicists contribute a val- uable service to newspapers, they sometimes go overboard with tiny "filler" items. Some of these blurbs are newsworthy, but very few dailies ever bother printing them. We've made a collection of some of the choicer items. We've neve botheredT printing them until now. * * *. FROM NORTH CAROLINA "North Carolina wrestling coach: Sam Barnes is proud of his strong Tar Heel wrestling team, but Barnes has a freshman grappler he like to talk about. He's a 250 pounder nmdAlsBuffaloe from Garner, N.C. As Barnes puts it: 'The perfect name for a wrest- ler.' ". FROM THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES - "In 1956, 107 out of 154 games the Pirates played were decided by one, two or three run mar- gins, showing that the Buccos battled all the way.'
