PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, MARCH 10, 1957 ROTC Rifle Team LeadsInterserviceLeague Some of the "biggest shots" on campus may be seen in the ROTC Rifle Range every Tuesday after- noon. These men are members of the Army ROTC Rifle Team. Under the leadership of Team Captain Tom Athanas, '59, the University team has risen to the top in the Center Interservice Rifle League. The men use .22 caliber Win- chester and'Remington rifles. Both types have clip-in magazines, en- abling seven successive shots. But "for safety's sake we load only one cartridge at a time," Capt. Dwight 0. Henderson, the team's faculty advisor, explained. Each rifle weighs about 14 pounds and costs about $145. A "spotting scope" is mounted on the barrel during practice sessions to aid the rifleman in seeing the target. Other equipment used by the men are cloth jackets padded at the shoulder and elbow and leath- er shooting gloves. The jacket and gloves cost about $20. Everything is financed by Army. the United States CLASSIFIED ADVERITI SING During a "fire" or meet, each man shoots from four positions- prone, kneeling, sitting, and stand- ing. Prone is the easiest position, standing the most difficult. This spring the team will com- pete for the Times-Hearst Rifle Shoot trophy. Michigan has won the trophy for the last two years.
