That Tuesday be maintained as an open house and Friday eve- ning be used as the third smoker for the first week of rushing. Doubting both the statistical accuracy of the questionnaire and the advisibility of holding rush- ing sessions on a Friday evening during football season, the com- mittee recommended a more com- prehensive study of the extra open house and the proposed Friday night smoker. It also suggested that a recommendation be pre- sented to SGC this spring for next merically evaluated and compared fall's rushing period. with prevoius years. It rec- ommended that strong emphasis again be placed on this point. Evaluation of informal rushing was also contained in the progress report. It stated a definite trend is emerging in this direction and recommended written and oral IFC publicity continue to stress informality. An increase in the number of. individuals pledging during open rushing was noted as a result of the original recommendations that this system be encouraged. The progress report recommended the procedure be continued and that the rushees this spring be nu- Increased communication and cooperation between residence halls and fraternity personnel was not fully complimented, the pro- gress evaluation said. Pre-rushing period meetings be- tween officers of IFC and IHC were recommended to outline ard emphasize rushing rules, proce- dures and future rushing evalua- tions. The committee also sug- gested that selected rushing coun- selors speak at individual house meetings within the Men's Resi- dence Halls prior to the formal rushing period. After giving up "one of the best known traditions followed by col- lege students" for a one-year trial of the orientation system, a new "constructive and competitive" system of hazing will take over next fall. The program will include tasks for upperclassmen (fetching li- brary books), memorizing the col- lege handbook and staging a vari- ety show for charity. * * * Dartmouth College dormitories have recently come under fire, re- ports the Dartmouth, campus daily. Equating them with Devil's Is- land, the paper found conditions within them "deplorable." "In many dormitories, water fights, window smashing and bulb smashing are the usual order of the day; the College has treated more serious infractions with a flip 'No gentleman would act in such a manner'" Comments an article on the problem, "There are many im- mature fellows, you know." * * * The University of Oregon's Daily has begun a study of women's dorm restrictions. Among the rules to be investi- gated are bed checking each wom- an at 11 p.m. on weeknights and 1:30 a.m. on weekends, dorm closing hours, which are set at 7:30 p.m. on weeknights, and a limit on the number of times a woman student can visit the li- brary each week.
