TV Show Plans Hospital Visit "Gift of Life", on the first half of the University Television hour, travels to Pittsburgh, Pa., to visit Republicans Propose New Commission The Ann Arbor Republican Party platform, announced yesterday, calls for the establishment of a Human Relations Commission. Acting on an advisory basis, the Commission would educate and report to the council on breaches of the present law and would sug- gest new ones. Another recommendation is to continue explorations of "fiscal relations between the Universityj and Ann Arbor." The Republicans would like a' vote of the people to determine whether a public bus system should be inaugurated if a private concern does not operate one. City expansion through annexa-; tion is another proposal. Drainage areas, however, must be considered before annexation, the- platform says. A public information program planned and aided by the city ad- ministration is proposed. An an- nual report would include a book- let of facts about the city. r The ' platform also included recommendations'or balancing the budget, providing necessary capital for vial necessities, and enforcing present housing laws. DIAL NO 2-2513 INDONESIAN HOUSING: Prof. Larso By RICHARD ASCH Four dark-skinned natives were dogtrotting along a dirt road. On their shoulders they carried two bamboo poles from which a new electric refrigerator was swinging. This is how Prof. Theodore C. Larson of the architecture and de- sign school exhuberantly des- cribed scenes of the antique and Oriental mixed with the modern in Indonesia, "a very exciting place." Prof. Larson recently returned from a four-month visit to Indo- nesia and a world-wide tour. )n Assists UN Project CMLRUEIIESLr' Contracted Project via film the new lar rehabilitation Allegheny County, trict. 22 million dol- hospital of the Institution Dis- DIAL NO 2-3136 The winner of an Academy Award Nomination for his starring role in "Giant" in another great portrayal The True Story ofj COL. DEAN HESS9, His visit to Indonesia involved a project contracted with the University via the Architecture and Design College by the United Nations and its divisions, UNTAA (United Nations Technical Assis- tance Administration) and hous- ing and towning country plan- ning, a social studies branch of the Secretariat. The contract called for giving technical assistance to the Indo- nesians on housing planning and designing and engineering re- search. Prof. Stephen Constantine Anastasius Paraskevopoulos, of the architecture school, who worked with Prof. Larson in In- donesia, is remaining there until the contract expires. Prof. A. Benjamin Handler of the architecture school was "an- chor man" here at the University. Serve as Advisors In Indonesia, the visiting Uni- versity professors served as ad- visors on socio-economic matters involving housing and made rec- ommendations for the specific program of action to be under- taken by the Regional Housing Center., The centre is located in Band- ung, the site of the scientific and engineering facilities of the Uni- verstiy of Indonesia. The Bandung Centre gives ar- chitects and constructors techni- cal advice on housing and town building. It also carries on social and eco- nomic studies concerning the liv- ing requirements and needs of the people on the islands. Centre Activities Activities of the Centre can be illustrated by technological re- search aimed at developing new systems of house construction that will uitlize new materials to be produced industrially. The Institute for Industrial Re- search is now experimenting with wall boards which make use of the coconut shells and fibers 'left over from the manufacture of soap. The Institute approaches the housing centre in order to find out what should be the size of -Daily-Len Cyr UN ADVISOR-Prof. Larson, recently returned from his visit to Indonesia, discusses the natives' eagerness to learn. "Ten years ago most of the islanders were illiterate-now there is a great drive to read, but a shortage of books," he said. these wall boards and what is their potential market. The Centre does research con- cerning market demand for these wall boards. It educates the peo- ple about this new material and about new archtiecture using wall boards. Potential Resources Another example of the Centre's function also deals with this fo- cus on creating an Indonesian architecture, using the islands' own potential natural resources and serving the islanders' own needs. Primitive architecture did achieve this. But the Centre is not interested in using raw ma- terials as the natives did. It seeks to develop new materials that can be industrially produced from the raw materials. During Dutch domination of Indonesia the foreigners intro- duced architecture to which they were accustomed in the Nether- lands. These villas had high-pitched roofs to hold heavy snow, but there is no heavy snow in Indo- nesia. Nevertheless, the Dutch were highly esteemed, and the In- donesians copied their architec- ture. This architecture, however, was not suited for Indonesian condi- tions. The villas were constructed without means of ventilation in order to withstand the cold Euro- pean wind. Indonesia is dry and hot. Recently the first plant was completed for the production of cement. Since these Indonesian islands are volcanic, they are rich with raw materials for this prod- uct. Now a structural system nust be developed that makes use of cement. Research institutes on the Uni- versity of Indonesia campus ale experimenting with development of light weight concrete. Their re- search will be pooled by the Bandung Centre, which will create a new architecture using this new material. The Centre does not participate in actual architectural work or building. It provides technical training to Indonesian staff mem- bers so they may take over the Centre's functions. "It is hoped that the staff mem- bers come to the United States to study," Prof. Larson remarked. He suggested we have an opportunity to learn from this collaboration. Developed Culturally "Indonesians may be underde- veloped in a technological sense but not in a cultural sense. As we provide technical assistance and Indonesia develops in its own way, catching up to us, we stand to benefit in a practical and intellec- tual sense. Prof. Larson enthusiastically reported that Indonesians are very receptive to new ideas. "What they plan to do in 20 years we did in 200 years. They learn from us how to tackle problems and seek to create their own indige- nous architecture."
