SKILLED ALUMNUS:
Violin Making Demands Fine Precision

If you take a few bolts of wood,
several simple tools and combine
them With 100 or so hours of la-
bor, the result may be a violin--
if you happen to be as skilled a
violin maker as Richard Maddy.
Maddy's appearance scarcely
resembles the popular conception
of a violin maker. His youthful-
ness attests to the fact that it
hasn't been too many years since
he graduated from the University
music school in 1952.
Four Violins
Maddy has produced a few vio-
lins a year since he went into
business for himself three years
ago. "I spend a great deal of my
tihe restoring violins," he added,
"but I would eventually like to de-
vote more time to constructing
them."
Maddy learned violin making
from an old Chicago x John maker.
Since his business began, it has
developed rapidly.
In addition to repairing violins
from local residents, he is work-
ing on orders sent him from Geor-
gia, North Jirota Alabama, and
several area~ in Michigan.
A great deal goes into the mak-
ing of a violin, Maddy related.
The outer top or table is carved
from a single piece of pine which
is split and then joined togethe:

Gold Coast
Celebration
Gold Coast students of the Uni-
versity, in conjunction with the
International Students Association,
will present a special program at
7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Rackham
Amphitheatre.
The program will honor Great
Britain's granting of independence
to the Gold Coast and will feature
a talk by University President Har-
lan Hatcher.
The Gold Coast students plan to
dress up in colorful native cos-
tumes to celebrate their colonial
independence.
Also featured will. be movies off
a speech by Gold Coast's prime
minister and of life in the former
colony.
Gold Coast became a protector-
ate of Great Britain, with the
promise of independence, in 1944.
When no move was made by the
British, the people of the Gold
Coast began to make their own,
culminating in the granting of in-
dependence tomorrow.

are inserted inside for added sup-

Complete "Corpus"
After the "corpus" or body is
completed, the neck and scroll
are carvei from one solid block
of maple.

According to Maddy, the "grace-
ful, skilled carving of the scroll
is one indication of the qgtaiity of
a violin."
After the "violin in the white"
is assembled, Maddy applies sev-
eral coat. of varnish
"It's a standard joke," he added,
"to have your own special var-
nish, but I admit that I have
mine, too."
