IF YOU FIND ONE: 'U' Medical School Needs Cadavers 1 By MARCIA THOMAS There is a shortage of cadavers at University Medical School.'. "Increasing demands by medical students for study have caused this shortage," Prof. Russell T. Woodburne of the anatomy de- partment explained. Prof. Woodburne also said the shortage is due to the greater demand for graduate study, par- ticularly in surgical training, and the increased number of under- graduate courses. There has been some tightness in supply for the past 15 years, he said, although it has not gotten to the point where the school must cut out courses. More than four students are using one cadaver to relieve the tight situation. This decreases the opportunity for students to study and observe because of the extra people to cope with. Four is the most satisfactory number on one body. Above that number it begins to get crowded. he continued. Willing to Will The main source of cadavers used are the ones unclaimed for burial by relatives or friends. State institutions usually provide the greatest percentage of cadavers. "There is a shortage all over the country," Prof. Woodburne added. People are showing a growing consciousness of the need for help- ing others, he remarked. They realize they can accomplish this by willing their cadavers to science. Not many states, however, pro- vide for willing of cadavers. Michi- gan does not. "Due to increased desire in people to help others in corneal transplants, providing skin grafts, blood transfusions and other living BILLY COUNT BASIESAH ECKSTINE ANDORCHESTRA featuring VAUGHAN PERSON! Masonic Temple - Tickets at Grinnell's - Detroit material, legal provision for willing parts of or whole cadavers will certainly be allowed in the fore- seeable future," Prof. Woodburne continued. There is now a movement in Michigan to legalize the right of individuals to will some parts or all of their cadaver to science. It is being instigated by the Lion's Club, which has always been inter- ested in blindness. Deposit with University "It is now possible for an indi- vidual to leave his cadaver to the University without legal permis- sion, just as long as the next of kin will carry out the person's wishes by turning it over to the school," Prof. Woodburne explain- ed. The advantage of the will is the moral and legal backing it gives to the individual's request, he said. "Some schools receive most of their cadavers by donations." The University has received enough in- quiries so I'm sure this is going to grow." An unfounded rumor continues to circulate widely that an indi- vidual can sell his body to the medical school while he is living. "This is not true," Prof. Wood- burne said, "as the University pays only the undertakers expenses and the transportation cost of the do- nated cadaver." Bodies are taken to East Medi- cal Building where they are given a thorough embalming and stored. After they are used for observation and studying purposes the final re- mains are cremated. Ashes are then buried in the University burial plot in Fairview Cemetery.
