PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1957 ANGELL STARTS ACCREDITATION: Field Selects High School Textbooks El 0 11 lI By RONALD PARK -1 'k. Back in 1871 James Burrill Angell, then University President, took a walk. This walk took him to Ann Arbor high school where his son was a student. During the course of his visit, President Angell was sur- prised to learn of the high quality of courses being taught. This knowledge led him to a revolutionary move. Until that time, all students entering college were required to take an entrance examination. But President Angell felt that in view of the superior quality of high school courses, students with good grades should be admitted to col- lege on the strength of their high school diploma alone. Eliminated Entrance Exam Thus, Michigan became the first state to evaluate high school cur- riculums and the University was first inthe nation to admit stu- dents without an entrance ex- amination on the basis of their high school work. This program of evaluation, called accreditation, has now spread to all 48 states. In Michigan, the accreditation process is hand- led by the University's Bureau of School Services. While accreditation has remain- ed an important part of the Bureau's work, the emphasis has shifted to service. Prof. John V. Field, instructor in the journalism department is a part-time member of the Bureau, which has seven full-time mem- bers. Since 1950, he has spent the first semester of. each school year traveling throughout the state on behalf of the Bureau. -Daily-David Arnold TEXTBOOK EVALUATION-Prof. John V. Field, of the journal- ism department reviews a new high school journalism textbook. As, a part-time member of the Bureau of School Services, Prof. Field evaluates journalism texts to assist the Bureau in its high school accreditation and service program. "Since accreditation is extra- up of top-echelon University per- legal," Prof. Field said recently, sonnel. This committee makes the final "we only go into a school by invi- decision as to whether the school tation." Once there, Prof Field is to be accredited; however, while works in his area of language arts. at the school Prof. Field and his Other specialists check areas of fellow workers do more than check the school curriculum and func- the curriculum. tions for which they have been Prof. Field assists in setting up trained. and improving school newspapers The reports of the different spe- and other publications courses in cialists are then forwarded to the journalism, and counseling in Bureau's executive committee made school public relations. Prof. Field claims that "most class A, B, and C schools now have publications, with many having them in their curriculum." which had a course in boat build- ing since many of the students eventually worked for thetown's leading industry, which was boat building. He pointed out that the school! can teach almost any subject it wishes. The only required subjects in Michigan is one-half year of government. Bureau Can Recommend Since the work of the Bureau is extra-legal it can only recommend, not force, a school to offer a sub- ject, but can of course recommend to the executive committee that accreditation be withheld. Prof. Field mentioned some of the disadvantages for a school in not being accredited. One is the added difficulty the school's gradu- ates being admitted to college. Also, some employers are reluc- tant to hire students from non- accredited schools, and parents of school-age children are sometimes hesitant to settle in a town with a non-accredited high school. Some high schools, however, are forced to bypass accreditation. They may find that they lack the funds to maintain a balanced cur- riculum. They, of course, have the right to withdraw from accredita- tion at any time. However, about 500 of the ap- proximately 650 schools in Michi- gan are accredited. Prof. Field said "the Bureau services exist because secondary schools want them." Jazz, Poetry Lectures Set. "America: from Jazz to Poetry" (A Series on Cultural Dynamics) is the title of a series of lectures sponsored by the International Student Association. John A. Flower of the Music School will give the first lecture at 8 p.m. today in Room 3-B of the Union. Subjects of the six lectures are music, short stories and novels, architecture, poetry, philosophy and a summary of the talks.
