FEBRUARY 20, 1957 Y WAITING LIST: 'U' Gives Reading Improvement Course Exchange Plan with England Offers Graduate Fellowships Petitioning for fellowships to study in England opens today, ac- Financed by the Alumni Fun cording to Anne Woodard, '57, of the Development Council, t- Student Government Council Na- one year fellowships will pay a tional and international affairs expenses except transportatio By DIANE LABAKAS A valuable service is being of- fered studentsby the Universtiy Reading Improvement Service lo- cated in the basement of Univer- sity Elementary School. Each semester, reading im- provement classes are set up by Dr. Donald E. P. Smith, Improve- ment Service chief, and his staff to assist students in their reading, vocabulary, note taking, examin- ation preparation and other aca-I demic skills. The primary service function consists of a seven-week noncred- it, nontuition course. Classes of approximately 20 students meetj semiweekly for one hour periods and 40 to 50 such groups are or- ganized each year. Another one to 200 students are tutored individually. These stu- dents are generally late regis- trants with urgent academic prob- lems. Common Complaint "Our most common complaint is our waiting list," Smith said. "Each semester applications out-1 number vacancies by some 50 per4 cent. However, students usuallyl do not have to wait more than one semester." He explained it would be diffi- cult for the group to move to a new building on North Campus because "we must be centrally lo- cated in order to be within rea- sonable distance of the students." Freshmen comprise the Serv- ice's largest group of clients, grad- uates rank second. Public school children also attend the Service and are charged a small fee. All students are screened diag- nostically to determine level of reading skills, vision and person- chairman. Two fellowships will be offered in an exchange program with the University of Oxford and the Uni- versity of London. Those eligible under the newly created Alumni Student Leader- ship Fellowship "must be accept- able to the University of Michigan Graduate School and have shown leadership in some phase of stu- dent activities," Miss Woodard said. The grants will be the equivalei of $1,600 a year for each studen Miss Woodard added. Petitions may be obtained fro the SGC Secretary in 2017 Stu dent Activities Bldg. Interviewin will begin the first week in Marc Harry Lunn, '54. former Dai editor and past National Studen Association president, with oth student 1 e a d e r s and Rege Eugene Power, of Ann Arbor, con ceived the exchange program. r -Daily-David Arnold READING PACER-This machine forces students to read at a pre-determined rate by passing a shade down the page covering previous material. It is part of the equipment for the University's free Reading Improvement Service. ality structure. Continuing diag- nosis is considered essential, Smith said. When a student does not im- prove rapidly, he is interviewed to determine symptoms relating to motivation, personal problems and physical abnormalities. Hells Grade Average "A recent study shows that stu- dents who take the course do bet- ter in their grade point average and continuation at the Univer- sity than those who have applied but have been required to wait," Smith asserted. Staff training and research are other functions performed by the Service. Smith declared that "from the viewpoint of long-term' contribution, the research func- tion is one of the Service's more important activities." Other research projects include evaluation of the Service, studies of teaching methods in relation to student personality structure, Ser- vice drop-outs and new techniques for evaluating reading compre- hension'.
