WORLDWIDE:
Campus
Knows
NolBounds
By JIM BOW
The University campus extends
far beyond the city limits of Ann
Arbor.
Summer camps for students in
such courses as geography, wild-
life management, geology, and
civil engineering can be found in
the Upper Peninsula and as far
away as the Rocky Mountains.
The University has even
stretched its sphere of influence
to Southeast Asia, where it has
worked with the University of the
Philippines to establish an Insti-
tute of Public Administration at
Manila.
Classes Scheduled
Classes are scheduled to meet
between 4:30 and 830 p.m. In
addition to the regular daytime
schedule, to provide an oppor-
tunity for government-employed
students.
Also, the Institute of Public
Administration provides scholar-
ships for students from other
Southeast Asian nations-Thai-
land, Indonesia, Malaya, and
Japan are represented.
The contract between the two
universities for the project was
signed in June, 1952, after a rec-
ommendation by Prof. James K.
Pollock, chairman of the political
science department, and Prof.
John W. Lederle, of the political
science department and director
of the public administration
school.
They had visited the Philippines
and suggested that "An Institute
of Public Administration would
provide a center for research, aca-
demic and in-service training, and
consultation services in public
administration."
Government Supported
The governments of both coun-
tries supported the universities in
the project.
In the final report, submitted
by Prof. George A. Peek, Jr., of
the political science department,
liaison officer for the project, the
various aspects of the project,
its problems and achievements,
are listed with reference to the
Institute of Public Administration
continuing as a part of the Uni-
versity of the Philippines.
