MIC, Michigan Instructionalr Computer, was begun in 1954 and is expected to be completed this spring. Many of the basic units were designed by the students and purchased from manufacturers, while others were planned and built on the scene. All the com- ponents have been linked together by students. Prof. Norman Scott of the engi- neering department pointed' out, "computers generally are pur- chased, rented or built to solve scientific and engineering prob- lems on a tight schedule, and can seldom be shut ' down and dis- mantled to show students how they work. "MIC, however, will be apart more time than it will be in opera- tion. Students will be continually dismantling it to modify compon- ents, add new units, rearrange old ones and test new theories. In a' sense, this computer will never be really completed." MIC is a digital computer, orf one in which electrical pulses are used to represent numbers, and will be able to add two, 10-digit numbers in 70 millionths of a sec- ond, multiply them in 1050 mil- lionths and divide them in 1120 millionths.
