There is no actual team championship decided in these relays, but emphasis is placed on individual supremacy in each of the nine events which make up the Relays. Last year, however, the Spartans captured the highest number of relays, and this makes them the favorites again. Outstanding performers for State to look for are sophomore Don Patterson, Frank Parrish and Roger Harmon, another sophomore. Perhaps the most interesting competition of the night will oc- cur in the diving competition. Here, Ohio State is 'expected to excel. Their two participants are Don Harper and Glen Whitten who placed second and third re- spectively in the recently com- pleted Olympics in Melbourne. Michigan Formidable Michigan will be well repre- sented also. The Wolverines will enter~ formidable competitors in the backstroke competitionled by Thomas Reissing, Dick Lahde, and Don Adamski. In the breastroke relays, Cy Hop- kins should hold his own, and in diving, Michigan captain John Narcy will provide tough compe- tition to the Ohio State stars. Rounding out the six entries are North Carolina State, Iowa State, and Kenyon College. Gym Squad Sees Action 'In Sarasota' j , Coach Newt Loken and five of his gymnasts returned from the Christmas holidays well refreshed in the art of gymnastics. The five Wolverines and Loken were part of the 400 participants in the 6th Annual National Gym- nastics Clinic in Sarasota, Fla. They were present to observe, during the week of activities, many phases of the sport. Jim Hayslett, Ed Gagnier, and Al Stall participated in the North- South Meet which was run by Coach Loken. Many of the stars of this meet were members of the United States Olympic Team. Jack Eckle, Frank Newman and Stall competed in the Clinic Championship Meet. Stall was the top competitor from Michigan, as he won the long horse event in this meet. Loken states that the group gaiied some very valuable know- ledge through the panel discus- sions, and that they also contri- buted some in the panel on Ath- letic, Injuries in which he parti- cipated. The first Conference competi- tion for the Wolverines will come on Jan. 11 and 12. KEY PLAYER - Archie Dees, Indiana's 6'8" center, is currently leading Big Ten scorers with 170 points. He undoubtedly will give Michigan trouble as the two teams clash in Bloomington, today. Pittsburgh Wrestlers Host Ihook. The team will start on the comeback trail when they en- gage the Michigan State Spartans at MSU this Tuesday night. Going back to 1953, one finds that the Wolverines started off, as badly as they did this year. They lost their first two WIHL games to North Dakota, 10-3 and 5-3. The 10-3 defeat was one of the worst ever suffered by a Hey-, liger coached outfit. That year the Wolverines finished third in the NCAA play- offs, the lowest they had finished since 1949. It was only two years ago, in 1954, that the Michigan team started off in exactly the same! fashion as they did this year and wound up winning the NCAAI crown anyway. They dropped their first two games to Colorado, 4-0 and 4-3. Then, they came back to defeat Denver 2-1 but the next night lost# another game 8-3. Last year, they began with a better than usual start as they won two, lost one and tied one in their first four starts. They beat North Dakota 5-1' and then dropped their next game 4-2. They streaked back against Denver tying them 3-3 and beat- ing them 6-2. That year the Wolverines com- piled one of their best records as they finished first in league play with a 15-2-1 mark and then went on to sweep the champion-, ships. ifi~i ~ ELlA KAZAN 'S production of TENNESSEE boldest story!
