STARTS SATURDAY GARY COOPER in "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" By EDYTHE HABER Women have a definite place in; early American history. At least that is what the Clem- ents Library's present exhibition,I "Eminent American Women" seems to prove. The display, arranged for the benefit of the Faculty Women's Club which met there Dec. 2, uses° original letter manuscripts and, first editions of books to offer a1 glimpse at famous early American women. t The letters exhibited were writ-' ten by Mrs. Paul Revere, Martha1 Washington, Dolly Madison and' Mrs. Nathanael Greene., Revere's Letter Mrs. Revere's letter was written1 to her husband in April, 1775. It warned him not to return to Bos- # EUROPE 20 Countries, 70 Days, $1305 Summer '57-shorter trip optional, EUROPE FOR COLLEGIANS a 255 Sequoia-Pasadena-Calift. ton after his ride and was sent through a Mr. Church. However, it appears that Church was a traitor to the patriot'sl cause because Revere never re-I I , ceived the letter. British General Gage received it instead. Mrs. Washington's letter was a short note written while on vaca- tion to her housekeeper, dealing with domestic matters. Short though it is, its formal style, it' was written in third person, re- veals her character. The note also shows Mrs. Wash- ington as a poor speller. She men- tions a "fine piece of linning made white," meaning either "lining" or "linen." Women Authors Also being displayed are books of women authors who had con- siderable fame in their time, but whose names are now unfamiliar to most of us. Among these are books by Phillis Wheatley and 'Susannah Rowson. Miss Wheatley was America's first Negro woman snpoet. Miss Rowson was one of our "GIANT" STARTS JAN. 11th first woman novelists. Her novel Charlotte Temple, written in 1802, was the biggest American "best- seller" before Uncle Tom's Cabin. The first American cookbook, written in 1796 by Amelia Sim- mons, is also on exhibit. Miss Sim- mons could neither read nor write, and had to dictate the entire book. Abolitionists Women abolitionists, who con-I tributed strongly to the anti-slav- ery movement before the CivilI War, are also represented at the display. Writing of the Grimke sisters are among those shown. Quakers from South Carolina, the Grimke sisters wrote articles 'and gave speeches spreading their humani- tarian doctrine. Later, one of the sisters married Rev. Theodore Weld, another abo- litionist, and they opened a pro- gressive, coeducational school in New Jersey. Among other things displayed are books and newspapers with prominent women publishers and papers relating to the history of the Faculty Women's Club.
