Maynard Street NO 8-7515 - oiI By BOB BOLTON After four straight Conference titles Michigan's dominence over the Big Ten track scene could end this year. With the indoorkseason rapidly approaching, track mentor Don Canham, is hard pressed to find suitable replacements for his grad- uation-torn ranks. Gone from a squad which has captured two consecutive Big Ten championships in indoor and out- door competition are half-miler Pete Gray, two-miler Ron Wall- ingford, pole vaulter Eeles Land- strom, high Jumper Mark Booth and sprinter Bob Brown. Four Have Titles Four of these men, Gray, Land- strom, Wallingford and Booth, all had won Conference titles in their respective divisions. With such stars as these gone, Wolverine hopes for a fifth con- secutive title ride on the perform- ance of returning lettermen and untried sophomores. Returning intact from last year is the Wolverine mile relay squad. Canham feels that this unit, composed of Bob Rudisell, Laird Sloan, Don Matheson and Robin Varian, may be one of the best in the country. Owen Will Be Back Also on the credit side is the f act that shot put champion Dave Owen will be back as will high Jumper Brendan O'Reilly. Owen has heaved the 16 lb. weight 57' and could very well re- peat as Conference titlist this year. In addition to these stars the Wolverines return eight other let- termen from last year. Among these are such, proven performers CANHAM COUNTING ON SOPHOMORES: Track Squad Losses May Point to Rough Season' Coaches Sa They Like New Rules Big Ten basketball coaches are cheering new rules changes that will help eliminate "cheap bas- kets" and place the premium of mobility on the big man,. Michigan basketball coach Bill Perigo comented recently that "Stationing two defending play- ers next to the basket on free throw was tested last season i4 the Big Ten and proved out well." Perigo thought this placement "takes away that cheap basket." Purdue's coach, Ray Eddy, said that the rule prohibiting move- ment over the plane of the re- straining line on free throws or jump balls will "put too much of a burden on the offciials - in- terpretation will be tough to de- fine, but the intent of the rule is fine. Eddy though anti-goal tending on offense as well as defense is "a good rule, but I don't think it hurts the tall player too much, Coach Ozzie Cowles of Minne- sota likes the goal tending rule and said "there was a little too much fooling around with the ball by some of the big boys." Ohio State's coach Floyd Stahl said "the new rules will put un- usual restrictions on' the big goal tenders." Rules changes will eliminate the bonus free throw on the first six fouls caled against each team in each half. Big Ten coaches also will em- phasize a principle of officiating called "no harm, no foul." r 340 urT Shop Ear for Christmas Gifts UNUSUAL iNEXPENSIVE CHRISTMAS GIFTS Wool mufflers from Elgin, Scotland.
