I By NADINE ULLMANN Ti ,' " t s. r L ,,r ..27_ ,_ fi.L74Z People who are truly devoted to a profession seem to radiate its atmosphere. This is a quality more true of actors and actresses than most people, especially exuberant young actresses. Such a person is the ethereal Nell Burnside of the Dramatic Arts Center. Her red hair flowing almost to her waist, she walked with the grace of a dancer into the dressing room and sat down in the midst of costumes, make-ups and props to talk about her career. Act and Act and Act "The only way to be an actress is Just to act and act and act," she began in her charming,.enun- ciated speech. "The audience is the best school; one performance can tell you more than any class. Audience reaction is vitally im- portant." She continued speaking with an intonation in her voice which sounded almost European. "The ideal actress has a double awareness; she must understand herself in reality and in character. Both have a direct relation to the audience." "My career Just emerged," she recalled. "It is something I've always wanted." In a few short years Miss Burnside, currently ap- pearing in "The Inheritors" has played many diversified roles. Began with Lessons Her experience began with pri- vate dramatic lessons in Cincin- nati where she made her debut. She appeared in an off-Broadway theater in "Thesmaphoriazuae" and "Francesca da Rimini." The young performer also spent two summers acting with the Shakespearian Festival at Antioch College appearing as Perdida in "Winter's Tale," Phoebe in "As You Like It," and Diana in "All's Well That Ends Well," among others. It was here that she met her husband, Ralph Drischell, who is a well-known actor with the DAC. SWINGING ACTRESS-Nell Burnside pantomimes a scene from the recent D.A.C. production, "The Inheritors.". "Shakespeare," she commented, "should be part of every actresses classical training." Joined DAC Miss Burnside joined the Dra- matic Arts Center this season and made her Ann Arbor debut in "Captain Carvallo." She then played the daughter in August Strindberg's "The Father" and is enacting an entirely new sort of role in Susan Glaspell's "The In- heritors." As the main character she is a college coed of the 1920's whom she types as a "modern Saint Joan," she becomes the chief cru- sader for a free India inflaming the college community. Miss Burnside will undergo dras- tic personality changes in her next play "Topaze" by Marcel Pagnool as she will portray a femme fatale. Flexible as Possible "Each characterization has given me something," she said reflectively. "I want to be just as flexible as possible. A good actress must be able to play every sort of part. "You start with yourself and then project entirely into another personality," she explained, "I just want to keep on working," she smiled, swinging her tennis racket as she began to pantomime a scene from "The Inheritors."
