No one was injured in the fire, although two of the room's oc- supants were reported to have; been in hysterical condition andl under a nurse's care.' PRACTICE PLUS THEORY: Law Curriculum Offers Experience in Case Club I I I i t By SUSAN KARTUS One criticism often made about law curriculum concerns the lack of opportunity for real life appli- cation of the law. The University Law School has attempted to ease this difficultyj by instituting the Case Club which provides practictal exper- ience in court room procedure. No law school course offers this prac- tical application experience re- ceived by Case Club participants. Every entering freshman is of- fered the opportunity to partici- pate in Case Club activities. Par- ticipation is voluntary, with 90 per cent of the freshman class participating. High Spirit "Case Club could probably be made anCacademic requirement, commented John Beach, Presiding Judge, but this has never been requested in view of the large enrollment and high 'esprit de corps' obtained on a voluntary basis." Each Case Club participant is graded on his total performance. The grade is based on the stu- dents ability to present his side of the argument. It is not dependent on his le- gal position, for as a rule, one side of a case, is stronger than the other. At the end of each fall semes- ter, all Juniors who have completed the usual three cases are ranked according to the grades they have compiled. The top sixteen are giv- en the opportunity to participate in the annual Campbell Competi- tion. Faculty Poses Case This consists or a single case, of a complicated nature, composed by a faculty member, which is argued by all participants in all rounds, of the competition. The quarter-final and semi- final elimination rounds culmi- nate with the remaining two teams opposing each other before a five- man court comprised of eminent jurists. The past years have seen Jus- tices Clark, Burton and Frank- furter of the United States Su- preme Court presiding. Prestige Gives Inducement The prestige of competing in Campbell Competition is induce- ment for high level achievement in Case Club. The full Case Club program in- volves working on three diffe- rent cases-one in eachrsemester of the freshman year and a third in the first semester of the junior year. The cases presented are hypo- thetical "Records on Appeal", that is cases that have gone to court and a decision has been made, but the decision has been appeal- ed. Therefore, the participants can not retract the findings of fact but only argue errors of law. Work In Teams The participants work in two- man teams, as the appellants or appellees. Each team prepares a written brief and also presents an oral argument before a three judge court. Each is alloted 15 minutes for oral presentation during which time the court may inter. rupt with any questions it de- sires to ask.
