PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, I PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SATURDAY, NOVE?,IBER 10, 195w ERI INVESTIGATION: Research on Wheel At Automotive Lab. The wheel, one of man's earliest inventions, is the subject of re- search by University engineers. In the University's new Auto- motive Engineering Laboratory, a 40-foot trough has been built, which is filled with sand, mud, clay, rocks and other "off-road" materials. Towmg wneels thruogh the trough, they measure care- fully the amount of resistance, slippage and sinking. A great deal of basic informa- tion on wheel performance can be gathered by using wheels of vary- ing size and number, varying the material in the trough and the size and direction of the loads on the passage of tandem wheels or the whels, among other factors. tank tracks through mud or across Heading the project is Edward T. Vincent, Prof. of Mechanical Engineering. "This is a long-range program in which we are trying to establish a mathematical theory for predicting the performance of a full-scale vehicle," explains Prof. Vincent. The Detroit Arsenal of the Army Ordnance Corps is sponsoring the study through the University En- gineering Research Institute as a part of a new College of Engineer- ing program on vehicle mobility. According to Vincent, investi- gators hope to someday simulate rocky terrain. The mathematical aspect of the research will be handled mainly by a group of mathematicians un- der the direction of Prof. George S. Hay. TU Hospital Plan Featured "Animal therapy" for hospital- ized children is the theme of a picture article in the current issue of Life magazine featuring Uni- versity Hospital. The article shows how the use, of coati mundis, rabbits, ducks, puppies, kittens, pigs, de-odorized skunks, and other animals, plus a steady diet of planned animal- oriented activities does wonders in taking the woes away from ill and disabled kids away from home. Maintenance of University Hos- pital's playroom, the center of childrens recreational activtities in the Hospital, is the statewide pro- ject of Kiwanis clubs all over Michigan.
