In PAGE TWO TrE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, NOVEMBEPR 9, 1958 r i r LAUNCH UNIQUE PROGRAM: Association Plan Links Alumni, Pupils 1 s By MARY LOUISE SAUER University Alumni Association is; launching a unique plan for closer alumni-student contact. The new "student governor" plan will link two undergraduates, pre- ferably juniors and seniors, with each regional University alumni club. A screening committee of six students will interview candidates on Saturday, Nov. 17, and make recommendations for appointment to individual clubs. Appointees (student governors) will keep close contact with their this sort has been done before! local club, facilitating functions on a large scale," he said. and projects linking home alumni' with students here. Projects under consideration in- clude fall "bon voyage" parties for students, regional-club spon- sored scholarships, contacts with prospective freshmen and encour- agement of alumni consciousness among undergraduates. T. Hawley Tapping, Alumni As- sociation secretary, is enthusiastic about the program. "Nothing of GILBERT & SULLIVAN'S comic operetta Last ! two nights Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre Tickets at Box Office We hope- eventually to include all of our more than 200 University alumni clubs in the plan." The idea originated in the stu- dent-alumni relations committee of the Development Council. Tapping said it was a result of increased' realization among students that they are about to become alumni, and growing interest in students by regional clubs. "The Alumni Association wishes to accelerate and give form to this mutual interest." Last spring, conferences were held with students to decide how best to fulfill the need for closer contact. When the present plan was approved ,the local clubs were contacted. Tapping said the proposal had good reception everywhere. He would like to start operations with about 30 clubs, or 60 student governors. jHe suggested that students in- terestedin participating contact either Alison T. Myers, in the Michigan League Alumnae office, or himself 'before their interview. He prefers that applicants have had some contact with alumni clubs. Eight clubs have expressed im- mediate interest in establishing contact, though all are amenable to the plan. These eight are: Fort Wayne, Ind.; Seattle, Wash.; San Francis- co, Cal.; Lancaster, Penn.; Sagi- naw; Flint; Royal Oak; and Ben- ton-Harbor-St. Joseph. Eight others have already ap- pointed student governors. They are: Wayne, Marion Schwartz, '58, and Karon Krueger, '57; Monroe, Marilyn Long, '60, and Barbara Krueger, '60N; Battle Creek, Jeanne Tammi, '58; Ecorse, Gloria Fowler, '57, and Nick Mitea, '59; Lansing, Judith Reynolds, '58, and Janet Dietrich, '57; Miami, Fla.,l John Golden, '57, and Cathy Car- rero, '58; Memphis, Tenn., Stan- ley Bilskey, '59, Robert Ashton, '59, and (ex-officio) Kirke Lewis, '57. Previously, student-alumni rela- tions were unofficial and inter- mittent, limited ,to scholarships and "bon voyage"parties. Of the four eclipses scheduled for 1956, two of the Sun and two of the Moon, only this one will be visible in North America the astronomer explains. "At exactly 12:02 a.m. on the night of Nov. 17-18, the Moon's eastern edge will make the first contact with the earth's shadow," Prof. Losh says. FOR SALE KAY MODEL C-1 bass never used.
