With the season already halfI over, every one of the September favorites with the exception of Ohio State has been dumped at least once and two teams, Minne- sota and Iowa, who were not even considered as contenders at the beginning of the year, are now heavy favorites for the Rose Bowl. Today's slate of four Confer- ence games should go a long way toward clearing up the clouded Big Ten picture. Major Questions The major questions that will be decided in this afternoon's games are.. . Whether Ohio State can lay claim to a new Conference victory record by beating weak sister , Northwestern. . If a battered Michigan State can regain the victory trail against Wisconsin after last week's shock- ing upset at the hands of Illinois..-. If Ray Eliot can keep faint Illini Bowl hopes alive by beating an erratic Purdue eleven.. . And if Michigan has enough punch left in their injury riddled team to side-track undefeated ' Iowa. at IiviinneapJ s an an ian a gles with Marquette at Blooming- ton in non-Conference play. OSU Favored Northwestern goes into today's clash a 20 point underdog. The Wildcats- who have but one vic- tory in five games this season will be hard pressed to stop the mur- derous Buckeyes, who are shooting for their 16th straight Conference win. Michigan State, hit hard by in- juries to five key players, will try to pick up some of the pieces fol- lowing last Saturday's fiasco at Champaign as they take on Wis- consin at East Lansing. The Spartans are still enter- taining dim hopes of a share of the Big Ten title and are lucky enough to have capable reserves to f ill the holes left by the injured. Ray Eliot, undisputed master of the upset in the Big Ten, will take his high riding Illini up against Purdue at Lafayette. The Boilermarkers, who are out of the race for Conference honors having suffered two defeats and a tie in three outings, will attempt to play the spoilers role. A loss today would eliminate Illinois com- pletely from the Rose Bowl scene. By BOB ROMANOFF V The Eagle Hawkers gained a quarter-final berth in the cham- pionship playoffs as a result of their impressive 19-0 win over the Air Force ROTC yesterday, in' I-M independent football. John Hummon led the victor's attack with three touchdown pass- es. Late in the first half the Eagle Hawkers drove fifty yards for their first tally, which was high- lighted by a long pass from Hum- mon to Dick Kozlasli, who took the ball and out-raced the de- fenders to the end zone. In the second half Hummon connected on touchdown passes to TWO TOP backfield men for the Iowa Hawkeyes who will see plenty of action in today's encounter with Michigan are Ken Ploen (left), quarterback and Don Dobrino, left halfback. Olyipic officials and Melbourne port authorities remained mysti- fied as to the whereabouts of a Russian ship carrying more than 100 athletes and reporters to the Olympic games. PRO BASKETBALL BEGINS: warriors Picked to Capture Crown The ship, a Russian freighter, was due to dock yesterday, but the port authority has received no word from the ship. It was last reported off the west coast of Aus- tralia, It is customary for ships to, wire their date and estimated time of arrival to authorities when they are about 24 hours from port. However, the authorities have re- ceived no replies to radio messages sent to the ship requesting infor- mation on its expected arrival. Some observers believe that the present unrest in Hungary and the Middle East may be responsible for the "disappearance" of the ship. They hinted the Russian ship "will remain behind schedule" until the international situation has been clarified. The ship, the Gruzia, left Odessa for Melbourne October 9 and was carrying 91 Russians, 17 Hungar- ians, two Czechs and 30 reporters. The eight teams that make up the National Basketball League promise to furnish the fans with more action than ever before. The defending champion Philadelphia Warriors are being picked by the experts to repeat. Returning to the Warriors are two all-stars, Neil Johnston and Paul Arizin, but missing will be All American Tom Gola, who has been inducted into the Army. The Warriors hope that the gap left by Gola's departure will be filled by' rookie Larry Costello, from Niagra. The Rochester Royals hope that another rookie, Sihugo (Sy) Green, last year's all-American from Du- quesne will be able to add a much needed scoring punch to its attack. They also hope that his presence on the team will give his old team- mate from Duquesne, Dick Rick- etts, the confidence he lacked last year. Bob Petit, last year's scoring champion will again lead the St. Louis Hawks' attack, but he should get some much needed assistance from Easy Ed Macauley, one of the all time great NBA players who was traded to the Hawks from Boston. The New York Knickerbockers, who were a big disappointment lastl year, are expected to furnish the Warriore with the most competi- tion for the eastern division crown.
