DIAL NO 2-3136 POINTED HIM TO GOD: Philippine War Hero Relates Trials Two Science-Horror Features Every woman Its slave! H Y P N OT ZaI.D I 4. 1 q l v, y 1 $ ti } i "' iif' By EDWARD GERULDSEN vi Students who attended theI Michigan Christian Fellowship sponsored meeting in Lane Hall last Sunday heard a talk by one of the real heroes of the Philippine campaign of World War II. After hearing of some harrowing war experiences -of Clay Conner, one can justly wonder that he is alive and whole today. Conner, now an insurance agent in Indianapolis, spoke to the group on the topic"Christ Brought Revo- lution." He explained the revolu- tion that comes in a man's life when he establishes a personal, working relationship with God, and illustrated with details of his own experience. Described Ordeals In the course of his talk, Conner, then a Major in the Air Corps, de- scribed some of the ordeals he went through during the 34 months1 that he spent "missing in action behind enemy lines, between 1942 and '45. In that time, he organized a 3,000 man guerilla force to carry on harassing tactics against the Japanese and aid in rescue opera- tions for American soldiers and airmen. One particularly harrowing ex- perience, he said, was the time PETER BEVERLY LEEk GRAVES eGARLAND -VAN CLEEF Coming: "THE AMBASSADOR'S DAUGHTER" 300 more Nipponese troops moving up into the area. So Conner and his buddies stayed and had break- fast where they were. Kill Self? However, it wasn't long before they sighted a column of enemy soldiers a short distance away. They ran in the opposite direction until they came upon another col- umn, then changed direction again only to be cut off again by yet another column of troops. Conner finally found himself alone in a marsh, surrounded by high grass. Considering the hope- lessness of his situation, he de- bated risking almost certain cap- ture and torture, or using the last remaining bullet in his .45 on him- self. Buried in Mud Refusing to give up, he dug a shallow hole and buried himself! in the mud. The Japanese came through the marsh on half-tracks, searching for him and setting fire to the grass. They failed to find him, however, and he was relative- ly safe again for a time. Throughout all this, Conner said, he was a Christian, but had not accepted Christ as his personal Saviour. "God to me was like an aspirin," he said, "I took it just when I needed it." Revolution Came Later The revolution in his life came after he returned to the United States in 1945. He went on a re- treat with a group of Christian businessmen from Indianapolis, where he had established himself as a successful insurance agent. On that weekend, he said he found what he had been lacking -- a personal, working relationship with Christ--and from that day on, was a different man.
