Information for the study, en- titled "Measures for Relieving Ann Arbor Street Traffic Conditions," was compiled from field work be- gun last spring under the direction of Lloyd B. Reid, traffic engineer- ing consultant from Detroit. Included in the findings of the survey are recommendations for a bypass expressway to circle the city and an inner loop to distribute vehicles destined for points within the city. The study predicted that the streets now existing within the ex- panding campus area will eventu- ally serve only as access to Univer- sity buildings. Recommendation was also made to widen a number of city streets. f . R The proposed annexation of East Ann Arbor by the city of Ann Arbor will be discussed on a local television program tonight by Guy C. Larcom, Ann Arbor City Ad- ministrator, and Kennedy Shaw. East Ann Arbor Assistant to the Mayor. The two officials will explain en- dorsement of the annexation by the city councils of both cities and discuss immediate and long range effects of such a move. Next Tuesday the proposal will be offered for approval by the voters of both cities. * s s Personal items donated by Presi- dent Dwight D. Eisenhower and other high-ranking Republican of- ficials will be sold Thursday night at an "Ike Auction" in the Ann Arbor High School auditorium. Sponsored by the Young Repub- lican Club of Washtenaw County, the auction will feature such articles as a trout fly from Pres. Eisenhower and a. personally auto- graphed White House etching from Mrs. Eisenhower, and an American flag that once flew over the Capi- tol in Washington from Sen. Charles E. Potter. Proceeds will go to local charity organizations. 0 m1 ORthP H E UM NOW SHOWING SHOWS 6:45 -8:45 A tender poignant drama of human loneliness and despair. Melodrama Starts Run Tomorrow By EDWARD GERULDSON Augustin Daly's 19th century melodrama, "Under the Gaslight," presented by the Department of Speech, will begin a four-day run in thehLydia Mendelssohn Theatre at 8p.m. tomorrow, according to Bruce Nary, Grad. A special matinee performance will be staged in conjunction with the University High School° Theatre Assembly at 1 p.m. Sat-' urday, also in the Lydia Mendels- sohn Theatre. "'Under the Gaslight' has been chosen for the 1956 High School Theatre Assembly," Prof. Jack E. Bender, play director said. _ "Because it is a delightful ex- ample of 19th century melodrama, it was one of the most popular- plays of its day. It still charms American audiences whenever the characters are given an opportun- ity to live upon the stage." Typical Melodrama "Under the Gaslight" is typical of the melodrama, relying heavily upon incident and complication in structure. It was Daly's intention to por- tray real life as he believed it_ existed in New York City in 1867, Nary said. The characters are varied, run-1 ning a wide range from high society to slum types. The play gives glimpses into the homes of the wealthy, into famous Delmoni- co's, and into the slums, the water- front anddthe railroad station. Depicts Famous Scene The scene depicting the hero tied .to the railroad tracks as a train approaches is one of the most famous in all 19th century drama. Tickets are on sale at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre boxoffice. A special student rate is in effect for the performances of tomorrow and1 Thursday.
