The Jug was still Michigan's, but people began to wonder when this team would crack under the strain of a suicide schedule. "M" had come close to defeat-but the record was stilly clean. Back to Michigan Stadium and Iowa-Forest Evashevski was after his first win against his Alma Mater. The.Iowa coach had tasted two bitter 14-13 defeats against his old school in the first 'two years of his coaching the Hawk- eyes. ' Victory Saved The Wolverines treated a Home- coming throng to one of the most thrilling games in Michigan his- tory. After trailing Iowa by a 14- 0 count at half-time, and by 21- 13 in the third quarter, Michigan exploded for three quick touch- downs for a 33-21 victory. Kramer, back in action, and Ai Maentz were superb in the second- half victory drive. Evashevski was crestfallen after seeing a sure win escape from his grasp. He would have to wait another year - at least. Thus the Wolverines had won its first six contests. They were lead- ing the Big Ten heap, and were still near the top of the weekly' collegiate ratings. Illinois was next. And then it happened. Michi gan's victory bubble burst quickly at Champaign, and most of the poking was done by a fleet half- back named Bobby Mitchell. Shades of Grange Mitchell, a second-stringer un- til he faced Michigan, gave the fllini fans a performance remin- iscent of Red Grange's memorable rampage against Michigan many' years ago. He was all over the field, running through the baf- feled Wolverine line almost at will. Michigan now had to win both of its remaining games, "and both of them were to be in the friendly. if somewhat large, surroundings of Michigan Stadium. Getting back on their collective feet, the fired-up Wolverines smashed Indiana, 30-0. The Hoos- iers were badly outclassed in this late autum affair. Michigan got the "easy one" out of the way; the "big one" was the following week, against the Buckeyes . .. and we all know what hap- pened that day.
