Ford Foundation contributed the largest individual sum of $38,500. The grant was made to continue an analysis of consumer behavior by the University's Survey Re- search Center. Students in engineering will benefit from the $28,739.72 coming from the estate of Salome K. Frederick. The bequest is for the Alvah B. and Salome K. Frederick Scholarship Fund. Grants from 24 other organiza- tions making up the balance of the gifts were also accepted by the Regents. In addition, Ronald Smelt was appointed as professor of aeronautical engineering in the, Engineering college. The Women's department of Physical Education will add Roxie Belle to its staff. Grant Leaves During the meeting the Regents granted seven leaves of absence. Those granted are Prof. Leslie A. White, Prof. Howard R. Colby, Prof. Basu K. Bagchi, Prof. Doug- las A. Hayes, Dorothy P. Marquis, Dean Blythe Stason, and Mar- land B. Small. Quartet To Play Stanley Quartet will present a program at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Rackham Lecture Hall. The program, which is open to the public, will include Beethoven's Quartet in F major, Quartet No. 7 by Finney and Mozart's Quintet in A major. The Quartet is also planning a series of concerts in Detroit be- ginning yesterday and countinuing through March. A second Ann Ar- bor concert is planned for Tues- day, December 4. Candidates To Debate Points The educational programs of the two major parties will be dis- cussed by candidates for the state legislature at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the University elementary school auditorium. Prof. Morris Janowitz of the soc- iology department, Democratic candidate for the House of Rep- resentatives, and Republican can- didate George Sallade of Ann Ar- bor, will describe their parties' viewpoints in a program sponsored by the School of Education. Port Huron Extension SIN' al Approved Credit courses at Port Huron in the fields of education, engi- neering and business administra- tion will be available in the future as a result of Regent action Fri- day. Authorization for the Univer- sity Extension Service to open an office in Port Huron was granted by the Regents at Fri- day's meeting. This office will serve St. Clair, Sanilac and Huron counties. The area has been served from the Flint and Saginaw offices, but demands for University services now exceed the abilities of these offices to provide. The new office will also serve in a liaison capacity for the Audio- Visual Education Center, and the Bureau of School Services. j Also at their meeting the Reg- ents approved plans to seek more than $1.2 million from the fede- ral government and private foun- dations for enlarged research fa- cilities at the School of Public Health. These funds would more than double the area available for re- search in the School of Public Health. In addition the Regents approved plans to seek approxi- mately $173,000 for further con- struction and equipment for re- search purposes at Kresge Medi- cal Research Bldg.
