A graduate student at Stanford
tUniversity, Stanford, Cal., has
launched a campaign to gather
2,000 student signatures on a peti-
tion to lower California's beer-wine
drinking age to 18, according to
the Stanford Daily.
The student, Lloyd Downton, be-
gan his crusade over a week ago
on his Sunday evening news com-
mentary program over local radio

porters at several other colleges,
and hopes to circulate petitions
through every school in California.
He is having difficulty, however,
in getting his campaign off the
ground. No other students have so
far offered to help in circulating
petitions at Stanford, and the
manager of KZSU has made it
clear that he has no connection
or sympathy with the project.
In support of his stand, Downton
has said that those old enough to
fight, pay taxes, go to a dining hall
or a dance hall and carry the same
study load as older students are
certainly old enough to "take a
drink when they want one.
