JACK IPALANCE EDDIE ALBERT rk DS DAY Raising children has become an increasingly popular pastime - especially among college graduates. The College Study Report on Population of 1956 recently divulg- ed that fact that college graduates now father the unlikely sounding average of 2.09 children per man. The report goes on to say that when the .09 becomes .15 of a child, male grads will be replacing them- selves man for man. Leaders among child raisers are the graduates of Brigham Young University, Utah. With a whop- ping 3.78 kids per man, the men of Brigham Young almost double the national average with grad- uates of Catholic universities run- ning a close second. The high fer- tility of these two groups is ex- plained by both a larger number of marriages and more children per family. Have More Children On the female side of the ledger, graduate women are far from re- placing themselves, bearing only 1.70 children apiece. Although col- lege mothers are bearing more children, at their present rate of increase, they'll never catch up with the men. However, the no- child and one-child families com- mon among older college gradu- ates are being replaced by fam- ilies with three and more children. Small families were formerly due to postponement of having chil- dren during the depression days. But college people are marrying earlier and seem determined to make up for lost time.I The College Study Report has studied the fertility of college grads each year since 1946, and is financed by the Scripps Founda- tion of the University of Miami. This year's report compares the average number of children of graduates of the past 10 years to that of graduates of 25 years ago. Express Optimism The report says that "happily" the 10-year grads are bearing a great many more children than those of 25 years ago. The "happiness" is that college graduates constitute a major source of bright youngsters. The reported increase of fertility in this group indicates that more qualified young people will be available to satisfy the world's growing need- for leadership. Gifted Children Need Enriched School Program, Lewis Says FOR RENT Gifted children need an enriched program in elementary school, but should be kept with children of their own age. James A. Lewis, University vice- president of student affairs, speak- ing before a meeting of the Michi- gan Executive Association at Ann Arbor High School yesterday, said that less than two per cent of all children could correctly be called "gifted." "As we discover these children, we can and should provide a better after-school hours program for them. Teachers with special skills, for example, might be invited to work with these children after school," he commented. WUE RTH NOW THRU SUN. MIGHTY IN SPECTACLE! Today she uncovers her most talked-about talents! SOPHIA Lewis stressed that special classes and double promotions were poor ways of dealing with the gifted children and his problem. "It'smost important that the children be taught in small groups in the elementary school. Ideally, these classes should not exceed 25," he contended. In junior and senior high school the gifted child should be allowed to concentrate in his special class- to concentrate in his special classes, while remaining with his chrono- logical age group. Lewis told the group that the gifted child is superior culturally, socially, and physically as well as mentally.
