Opera Star To
Play 'Orpheus'
Hiram Sherman, who has ap-
peared several times in dramatic
productions in Lydia Mendelssohn
Theater, will star in the New
York .City Opera Company pro-
duction of "Orpheus in the Un-
derworld" in November.
The Shakespearean player, who
is making his debut in opera aft-
er 20 years on the stage, will take
the role of the cigar smoking Jupi-
ter in the Orpheus work.

the Regents of the University at
their September meeting Friday.

Counseling
Committee
Starts Study,
Questionnaires prepared by the
Universitly Counseling Study Com-
mittee will be mailed to approxi-
mately 20 per cent of the Univer-
sity students within a week, David
Baad, '56, assistant to the Dean of
Men announced yesterday.
The questionnaires represent the
first stage of a comprehensive
study of all University Counseling
services ordered by Student Gov-
ernment Council last Feb. 29.
. SGC requested the study in order
to better determine the needs for
counseling development during the
rapid growth of the University,
Baad said.
"An effort is being made to bring
about better communication be-
tween the students and the serv-
ices and between the various serv-
ices themselves," he explained.
The term "counseling services"
applies not only to the academic
counseling programs of the indi-
vidual schools, but also to the
areas covered by, the 'Office of
Religious Affairs, the Health Serv-
ice consultants, the Bureau of Psy-
chological Services, the Speech
Clinic, the Placement service and
other allied departments of the
University.
A second set of questions, de-
signed for the use of each service,
will be issued within three weeks,
Baad announced.
After the student questionnaires
are returned they will be tabulated
by IBM machines.

Each bridge hand is divided into
two parts; the bidding and the
play. It is easy to forget the
bidding once play has begun. This,
of course, can be fatal as the bid-
ding can give clues to the location
of cards important to the play.
The auction found south burst-
ing with enthusiasm as he pus~hed
his side to an optimistic game in
spades. West opened the king of
hearts and then switched to a
small club, hoping to develop a
club trick before dummy's hearts
could be established for discards.
Declarer played the Jack from
the dummy, which won the trick.
- Declarer's first problem was to
discover the best way to try to
hold the trump losers to one. To
this end the bidding was called to
mind.
West had failed to open the bid-
ding-even as third seat. How-
ever, west had opened the king of
hearts-indicating he also had the
ace-and the success of the club
finesse located that king in his
hand. Thus he could not have the
spade king, and a trump finesse
would fail.
A heart was led from the dummy,
west winning with his ace. A sec-
ond club was led, dummy's ace
winning. ''The spade ace was
cashed, then a high heart on
which south - discarded his last
club.
