I1 By DAVID TARR Plans are underway to extend facilities of radio station WCBN to women living in residence halls on the Hill. The first transmitter, probably for Alice Lloyd, may be completed and installed before Christmas ac- cording to a report submitted last night to, the Inter-House Council. One major complication-finance -has to be worked out before work on the project can begin. Background Music The student operated station serves mainly to provide back- ground music for studying, campus news, and a nationalpress wire to provide news broadcasts. Studios are located in South, East and West Quadrangles, but the station is also heard in Martha Cook and Victor Vaughan. Officials for the network feel that advertising can pay for the initial transmitter which would cost a maximum of $400. Paying for the remaining unitss costing about $300-$350 each, is where the problem arises. Financed on Split Financially, WCBN operates on a network split basis. All adver- tising is taken by the network and the profits are divided between the three Quadrangle stations. They use this money for operation. The problem arises in paying for the new transmitters. After the network has paid for the new transmitters it is possible there may not be sufficient funds re- maining to enable the three Quad- Read the Classifieds Made by Adults . , . If these split system funds fall short, the Quadrangle Councils will have to foot the bill for operating their own stations. Shown Caution Because of this, IHC, which must approve any major financial ex- penditure of WCBN, has approach- ed the project cautiously. Another reason for caution is the new transmitters, after the first one, will probably be financed by a University loan underwritten by IHC. WCBN feels that since the Hill transmitters will add approxi- mately 2000 women to the listening audience-bringing the total to 6000-the expected additional ad- vertising will be sufficient to meet financial needs.
