Courses Open In Swimming For All Coeds Water Safety Group To Convene Tonight; Other Classes Available Although summer and most of the sports and activities associated with it have already passed the scene, swimming can still be en- joyed by coeds on campus. This pastime is not only fun, but may also save one's life at some time. With this in mind, the Women's Physical Education De- partment urges all women enrolled at the University to join a swim- ming class. A few places are still open in be- ginning swimming classes for those who wish to learn the fundamen- tals. Water Safety Class There is also a class for those who- know how to swim and have their Red Cross Water Safety Cer- tificates. This course will enable the Red Cross safety instructors to keep up; with the latest 'life -savings tech- niques. Coeds enrolled will assist in beginning swimming classes and t in ; the recreational swimming sessions. - Through this experience, ,the in- structors can keep their Red Cross certificates' active. Meeting Tonight The first meeting of this group will be held at 8 p.m. tonight at the Women's Pool. Students who are interested and are unable to at- tend may telephone the pool and leave name and 'phone number. Swimming has become a more importast part of women's activi- ties eyef since the new pool was dedicated in 1954. Women May Petition For Ten League Posts -Daily-Dick Gaskill MICHIGAN MERMAIDS: Coeds may learn of the different, swimming classes offered by the Women's Physical Education Department at a meeting to be held at 8 p.m. tonight at the Women's Pool. One of the most important or- ganizations centered around the pool is Michifish. This is a swim- ming group of the Women's Ath- letic Association, consisting of coeds skilled in synchronized swim- ming stunts. Swimming Tests In order to be admitted coeds must pass tests. Good swimming, form is the club's only" entrance requirement. It proves advantageous of the coed is proficient in diving but this skill is not a necessity for admit-= tance. A Junior Michifish group which was also organized to give women interested in synchronized swim- ming an opportunity for instruc- tion and practice in their strokes and stunts. After a short period, members of the junior group may be admitted into the Senior Michi- fish. Michifish annually presents a show at the Union Open House and a Spring Concert. Last year the Women's pool and the Women's physical education department co-sponsored the first annual Acquatic Festival. Synchronized Swim Festival About 50 highly selcted syn- chronized swimmers from all over the country, both men and women, took part in the event. A n o t h e r important activity which could not exist without the pool is the Speed Swimming club. The purpose of the club /s to give coeds who are interested in com- petitive swimming an opportunity ..:,._ REFERENCE to practice together, improve skills and hold meets. Competitive. dual meets with other schools and organizations are planned for the year. The club is open to any inter- ested women, regardless of the amount of previous swimming ex- perience. ADC Considers Co-Op, Dorm Life Associate membership in resi- dence halls and co-op proposal were among the items discussed at the Assembly Dormitory Coun- cil meeting Monday. A motion was passed to set up a co-op council composed of the presidents of the six co-ops and a representative from Assembly Board to meet once a month. Considering associate member- ship in the residence halls, ADC announced that dues would be one-half the amount of those for the women now living in the resi- dence hall. An associate member will have the social privileges of the house and will be encouraged to partici- pate in such activities as the house athletic teams, Fortnight, and inter-house projects. In other business it was an- nounced that women who wish to work in the SGC office may put their names in Jean Scruggs' box in the Undergraduate Office of the League. Posts open are two members for the Social Committee, and for Junior Girl's Play, a Scenery Chairman, an Assistant Props Chairman, a Costumes Chairman, a Stunts Chairman, ushers and a Transposer-arranger., Also needed is Senate Executive Secretary, and one member of League House Judiciary. Junior Girl's Play Junior Girls Play Is. an annual event which is written, produced and directed by junior coeds. It was first presented by six juniors to the Michigan campus in the spring of 1904. Since then, JGP has become an important institution on campus. Last year's "Rising High," hailed as a "great success," was driected by Sue Arnold, written by Sally Miller, and was under General Chairmanship of Nancy MacDon- ald. All women interested in acquir- ing positions must write a peti- tion. This includes freshman women. Coeds will then be inter- viewed on an informal basis by the Interviewing and Nominating, Committee. Will Accept All Petitions The committee will accept all! coeds' petitions for the Leaguej positions. Previous experience is not important. The important fac- tors which will be taken into con- sideration are a coed's interest, her -p"Ans for the position and en-, thusib-;? for the job. Peti ioning opens Friday, Oct. 9 and ,will close at 5 p.m. Thurs- day, Oct. 15. Members of the In- terviewing and Nominating Com- mittee will be in their office in the League from 3 to 5 p.m. at that, time to answer any questions a coed may have. Interviews will be held in the League from Thursday, Oct. 15 to Saturday, Oct. 17. When a coed hands in her petition she may also sign up for an interview. * * * League Posters.. . The woman responsible for drawing the sign was Mrs. Jean Schuler, wife of a law school stu- dent, an art major who graduated Northwestern University. Mrs. Schuler, whose hobby is ceramics, made the posters so professional that the League mem- bers decided to frame them to pre- vent them from being hurt when students stopped to gaze at them. On these posters, every area ofj the League is represented.
