THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY. OCTORER I-1g50 THE MICHIGAN DAILY~~~ W~lV~~Vn~~vo. iZc AV 0, 1DJU Ear OFESSOR SUGGESTS: Gifted Children Need Special Program ifted children are not getting uare deal in today's classrooms, . H. Glen Ludlow of Education "I r I social leadership; those who are1 ing the problem. One is accelera- outstanding in the creative areas tion, which has been used less fre- 1 3 of music, art, writing and drama- I quently in, recent years but is1 hool reported recently, 'If we want a democratic school tem," he said, "we must increase e learning opportunities for the ted students. As things are now, eir capacities are not being fully veloped." Professor Ludlow explained that special program. would begin h the systematic iscovery of ingsters with a vari ty of talents d I.Q's of 130 or above.. Divide Youngsters He would divide these youngsters o those who rate high in ab- act thinking; those who have usual ability in science and tics. Teachers should aid in the dis- covery of talented pupils by intelli- gence and sociometric tests, me- chanical and artistic aptitude tests and cumulative personal records. Professor Ludlow believes that ideally, superior students would be taught in the regular classrooms. "Looking at it realistically," he says, "today's overcrowded schools make it a necessity to find other methods of dealing with the gift- ed." Suggests Acceleration He cited two other ways of tackl- coming back into favor. Under this system a bright student might omit the last year of high school and enter college a year earlier. Professor Ludlow prefered the method which he calls partial seg- regation. The gifted child would spend Sart of the day in the regular cassroom. The rest of the day would be devoted to intensive work in language and literature, writing and producing plays, reviewing books and work on the school newspaper. 7t CAMRRRMfl Plan Varied Art Shows American, European.and Orien- tal artists will be presented in exhibitions of different styles of art during the coming year at the University -Museum of Art.
