Pistolman Claims He's Easy Target NEW YORK (MP)-The world's best pistol shot, a sharp-eyed Army sergeant, acknowledges he'd be an easy pickoff for Wyatt Earp or the Lone Ranger in a gun duel. M/Sgt. Huelet L. Joe Benner is "top gun" with a .45 revolver but, shattering the illusions of pop- eyed TV viewers and Western movie fans, says he can't shoot from the hip. "Most hip-shooters couldn't hit a barn at 100 yards," the thick- chested sergeant from Paragould, Ark., added. "To be a good shot, you must concentrate and take aim." Any Wyatt Earp fan knows that to stop long enough to take aim against the Western marshal is the same as endorsing a ticket to the graveyard. Pistol Champion But Benner doesn't shoot in movies. He just shoots in tourna- ments. And he's five-time national pistol champion, twice winner of the world crown and defending gold medalist in the 50-meter slow fire competition of the Olympics. From 40 yards Benner can put six straight bullets into a bulls- eye no bigger than a postage stamp, can keep a tin can jump- ing along the ground with a steady stream of bullets and can send a'.45 slug crashing into the blade of an ax, causing half of it to explode a balloon on the right and the other half to bust a bal- loon on the left. Benner is 39, 5 feet 10 and 225 pounds. He is like old Western heroes in at least one respect. He believes in clean living to keep his trigger finger firm. He doesn't drink or smoke, and hasn't had a cup of coffee for 20 years. "Coffe's bad for the shooter's nerves," he says. Read the Classifieds Importance Of Voting Made Clear By JOY MILLER The individual voter wields more power at the polls than he prob- ably thinks he does. One vote in each precinct may1 decide a candidate's future-the records are full of examples. That's why the person who excuses his non-voting with "My one vote doesn't mean anything, why bother?" isn't up on his facts. In 1952 a record U.S. vote was cast-63 per cent of Americans of voting age went to the polls, com- pared with percentages like 80 to 95 in Sweden, Italy, England and Belgium. President Dwight D. Eisenhower carried Missouri by 29,599 votes. Missouri has 4,666 election pre- cincts. Thus President Eisen- hower's margin of victory repre- sented about six votes for each election precinct in the state. In South Carolina Stevenson's victory margin boils down to seven votes per precinct. In Kentucky and Tennessee the winning mar- gin also was 10 or less votes per precinct. In 12 other states the margin was less than 35 votes per precinct; in 30 states it was less than 60. Only in 10 states was it more than 100 votes per pre- cinct. In some of the important con- tests of recent years a compara- tively few votes were decisive. In the Connecticut gubernatorial election in 1948, for example, Abraham Ribicoff (D) defeated John Lodge (R) by 3,115 votes- and close to a million ballots were cast in that election. Close Elections Here are some other close elec- tions: In 1952 Wayne Aspnall (D) of Colorado was elected to the House of Representatives with a plurality of 29 votes-out of 79,323 cast. That was the closest in the whole country that year. In the 1954 Congressional elec- tions, Richard Neuberger (D) won a Senate seat from Oregon by 2,462 out of 569,088 votes cast, and Frederic Coudert (R) was sent to the House of Representatives from New York by a plurality of 314 votes out of 88,000. Most recently, in the 1956 Maine election, the first district House race ended up 28 votes apart. The unofficial tabulation gave the vet- eran Rep. Robert Hale 58,027 to 57,999 for Democrat James C. Oliver. A tabulation error of only .00025 per cent could change the unofficial result. All ballots, con- sequently, were called in to safe- guard then until an expected re- count can be made. The official result probably won't be known until Oct. 3 when the governor and council meet. The next time therefore anyone is tempted to think his vote doesn't count, he might ponder these close races-and the ones the 1956 presidential election is likely to turn up, after he has missed his chance.
