The sellout crowd of 34,800 watched unheralded West Virginia dominate the game throughout against their arch rivals. Pitt, trailing by six points going into the third quarter, struck twice in lightning like succession to win the 49th meeting in the series starting in 1895. A punt by Pitt fullback Tom Jenkins rolled dead on the WVU 3. On the first play, Mountaineer fullback Larry Krutko fumbled going into the line and Pitt re- covered. Two plays later fleet Ray DiPasquale went around left end for the Panthers' first touch- down. Mabrose Bagamery's placement was god for a 7-6 lead. On the kickoff, West Virginia's Ralph Anastasio was hit hard by a mob of Panthers and fumbled at the 20. Pitt recovered. Ray Pas- sodelis scored from the 5. four plays later. Quarterback Darrell Lewis tacked on the 14th point, with 5:19 left in the period. A quarterback sneak by Mickey Trimarki accounted for both WVU touchdowns. * * * Tech's Volkert Stars LEXINGTON, Ky. - Swift George Volkert exploded around Hoosier Stricken BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Volkert's dazzling third-period run behind the protection of tackle Ormond Anderson provided one of the few . offensive thrills for a shirt-sleeve crowd of 30,000 and a national television audience. Reserve Strength a Factor Tech, obviously attempting to take advantage of Its superior re- serve strength, kept reasonable control of the ball the opening half, marking 80 yards in 19 plays for one touchdown. Kentucky penetrated midfield only five times, giving the Tech defense only one anxious moment. The key in Tech's first touchdown was a 20-yard dash around left end by Volkert that carried to the Kentucky 31, and a fourth-down 12-yard pass from Vann to half- back Paul Rotenberry to the Ken- tucky eight. Two plays later, Vann umped and passed to end Ted Smith in the end zone. TCU Routs Kansas LAWRENCE, Kan. - Halfback Ken Wineburg reeled off three touchdowns, one on an 80-yard run to outshine teammate Jim Swink in leading Texas Christian University's Horned Frogs to a 32-0 victory over the Kansas Jay- hawks in a football season opener today.
