AN DAILY SUNDAY, JANqUARY 8, 19513.6 Salvation Army Aids 'Waywards' By ANN WOOD "Do you save girls?" the voice asked. "Yes, we do," Sr. Major 0. C. Asserude of the Salvation Army answered.' "Well, 'will you save me one for Saturday night?" So came one response to the advertisement run by the Salva- tion Army. The ad, "Any woman or girl- in trouble or needing a friendly advisor may write or call the Sal- vation Army-" is run for the benefit of girls and women having problems of emotional and marital nature. Most responses are genuine and sincere and come from unwed ex- pectant mothers. Women who go to the Army with this type of problem are given immediate counsel. If they so desire, the Army makes ar- rangements to place them in one of its hospitals. When they arrive at the hos- pital they are assigned a room. Then they speak to a case worker who helps advise them as to the type of work for which they are best suited. "The object is to not only help them physically, but to also help them spiritually," Ada Asserude, twenty-year worker with the hos- pital and Army, said. After the birth of the child the mothers are told the advantages and disadvantages of putting the child up for adoption and then left to make their own decision. If they choose adoption, and are in Michigan, they are referred either to the Michigan Aid Society or the probate court. These organi- zations are the only legal adoption agencies in the State. If the women are interested, the Army helps them find employ- ment. The principal object of the pro- gram is, of course, to arrange a happy ending for all concerned. "Sometimes we even try to pro- mote a marriage. Lots of them have been performed right in our own hospitals," said Ada Asserude. Ballet Rehearsal The first full rehearsal of the newly formed Ann Arbor Civic Ballet will be held at 7 p.m. to- morrow at 603 E. Liberty. i *IFIEIUS MICHIGAN DAILY CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING RATES LINES 1 DAY 3 DAYS 6 DAYS 2 .66 1.47 2.15 3 .77 1.95 3.23 4 .99 2.46 4.30 Figure 5 average words to a line.
