CINEMASCOPE - COLOR BY DELUXE 11.A Ann Arbor consumers are nowv paying generally less for individual food item purchases than April 1953, according to a Chamber of Commerce analysis. Robert Gage, Manager of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, issued a list of monthly food prices composed of 25 representative items. Included were bread, but- ter, meats, milk, fruits, canned vegetables, and various other popular foodstuffs. The aggregate of these items sold for $11.37 in April 1953, rose to $12.25 in April 1954, and today sells for $10.71, a 21/2 year low. The groceries were charted at the same Ann Arbor market and constant brand names were used during the study. Since April 1953, meat, eggs, po- tatoes and butter have experienced price drops. Bacon fell from 69 to 49 cents a pound. Pork chops are a dime less at 59 cents. A pound of coffee which towered at $1.29 in late 1953 rests now at 95 cents. Potatoes and butter are 5 and 14 cents lower respectively. The Chamber of Commerce warned that the study was not an officially weighted food index. Gage noted that, "Consumers may purchase a larger quantity of the food items which have not fallen in price than of items which have become cheaper and thus their total food bills are not less." U' Professor Austria Bound After delivering a paper in At- lanta last week, Prof. Lloyd E. Brownell, supervisor of tie Uni- versity's Fission Products Labora- tory, left for Austria to speak at a medical conference. Prof. Brownell will tell the con- ference later this week of the machines that have been designed in the laboratory to irradiate parts of the human body. Prior to Prof. Brownell's trip to Badgastein, Austria for the con- ference, he spoke before the 122nd meeting of the American Associa- tion for the Advancement of Sci- ence, held Dec. 27 in Atlanta. The topic of his talk there was "Radiation Facilities Designed to Process Commercial Quantities of Food Products." This was in conjunction with the lab's recent work in shifting em- phasis from sterilization, to lower levels of radiation, which include pasteurization and insect deinfes- tation. Wages Changed A reduction from a 44 hour to' a 40 hour work week for hourly city employees was authorized Tuesday night by the City Coun- cil. A 20-cent-an-hour pay increase was also passed by the council for hourly employees, instead of a 12 cent increase approved at the Dec. 19 meeting.
