Smarting from their 5-1 loss of the previous night, the mighty Sioux were hard-prkssed all the way and were not able to sew up the contest until the last minute of the final period. Wolverine goalie Lorne Howes suffered a gash over his left eye near the beginning of the third period when the puck came sail- ing out of a wild scramble in front of the Michigan net. The game was held up for several minutes while three stitches were applied to the wound. Mike Castellano opened the scoring for the Nodaks in the first minute of play when he flipp- ed the puck past Howes after taking a pass from Bill Reichert. M' Retaliates Michigan retaliated less than eight minutes later when a Tom Rendall to Ed Switzer combina- tion tied the score. North Dakota took the lead again at 4:04 of the second period as left wing Jim Hannesson out- witted Howes for another tally. Special To The Daily CHICAGO Ed Gagnier was the stellar performer in Michigan's first gymnastics meet of the sea- son, which saw the Wolverines place fourth out of the twelve teams competing here yesterday in Chicago's Midwest Open. Gagnier placed first in the par- allel bars, third in the flying rings,' and was third in the all-around point total, missing second place{ by only two points. Gagnier's all-i around performance was even more brilliant than it would have been under ordinary conditions, since there were over fifty com- petitors in each event. Wolverines Score 57 The Wolverines amassed a total of 57 points, and were topped only by the University of Illinois at Chicago, Iowa and Illinois. The Chicago Illini paced the pack with a total of 98 points, while Iowa came in second with 90 and Illi- nois finished with a total of 79. Other teams competing in the meet included Michigan State, Nebraska, Indiana and Western Illinois. Supplementing Gagnier's -great performance were Captain Chico San Antonio, Wayne Warren and Bob Armstrong.
