Man's hands are a factor separ-
ating him from lower forms bf life.
Unlike more primitive organ-.P
isms, man can employ the thumb
as a separate joint: This enables
him to pick up objects, rather than
merely grasping them.
Largely because of this ability,
and because of a more highly de-
veloped brain, man has, through
the infinite span of evolution and
development, acquired the ability
to solve a multitude of complex
problems.
As an infant, he discovers
through his sense of touch, the
relative size and shape of familiar
objects. His manual dexterity a
grows as his mind develops, andC
by the time he,is six or seven he "F
has learned most of the hand's
basic 'functions.
As he continues to mature, he
cultivates the ability to execute
new and specific tasks. He learns
to take metal and gut and pieces
of wood, and from these raw be-

his kind.

Derived From
Other Lands
Christmas trees, religious cere-
monies and the Santa Claus legend
are among the customs inherited
from other lands.
The legend of the decorated tree
comes from Germany. It began
when Martin Luther decorated the
first one with burning candles.
France emphasizes religion and
stresses Midnight Mass. The
French are also devoted to the
"Creche," a small miniature of the
Nativity scene.
The American Santa Claus be-
gan as St. Nicholas, an early
bishop in Asia Minor who made a
specialty of bringing joy to poor
children by secretly leaving them
gifts. Early settlers in the United
States changed the concept of
Santa Claus from a bishop into a
good natured elf.
Spanish children receive gifts
from the Three Wise Men, jour-
neying to Bethlehem. Italian pres-
ents are dispensed by a fairy
named Belfana.
