FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2,1955 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Women Prepare Soph Scandals League, Union To Hold Yuletide Open House DAILY Sophomore coeds are making final preparations for the weekend of dancing and variety shows to be presented today and tomorrow at the League. Two original performances will highlight the entertainment for each evening. "Westcapadia," the first show, tells of a ghost town which has the capacity of coming to life.P "Westward Ha" will recount the adventures of Miss Primm's camp for girls on their escapades in the western desert. Original music and scripts will highlight the two shows. Western Decorations Decorations will be in keeping with the themes of the shows. The corridor of the second floor of the League will feature western stand- ups depicting the wild west. f The ballroom will feature a western scene in silhouette. Color-I ed cactus, rocks, cattle skulls and wagon wheels will present a con- trast with the lifesize silhouette of a horse and rider. The Michigan Room will be con- verted into a typical western "saloon" with swinging doors, rou- lette wheels and decorative dice. Two Bands Couples will dance to the music of Paul Brodie and his band in the Main Ballroom, and to the square dance music of Jack Redd in the Vandenburg Room. Both variety shows, "Westca- padia," and "Westward Ha," will be presented in the Hussy Room. Tickets are now on sale in the League Round-up Room, in Mason Hall and on the diagonal.n 'Crazy Cactus' Game Various prizes will be given toc guests at the "Crazy Cactus" chance game, a feature attractionv of the weekend. Bridge enthusiasts will competeF in an all campus duplicate bridger tournament which will begin at 8s p.m. each night. Sophomore art students will acta as caricaturists for both evenings. In addition to portrait drawing, there will be a photographer pres- ent both nights. c. Asian Nighta To Feature a Art, Music The music, dancing and poetry of Asia will give spectators ac glimpse into the culture of that focal point of today's world at an "Asian Evening" to be held at 8 p.m. tonight at the InternationalI Center. Sponsored by the International Students Association, this program is first of a series, designed to de-l velop world consciousness by sub-F merging national feeling,. Throughout the evening the art- work and handicraft of the Asiant countries will be on display in thec lounge.a Pakistanis Entertain Commencing the entertainment, Abu Jamal Nazhar Hassen of Paki-t stan will do a caricature, while several other Pakistani students1 sing classical songs. Leilla Padilla of the Philippines will follow with a piano selection.t Moving to Thailand, Samonsri Bunnag and Phuchong Bhrensril will perform a traditional Siamese dance. Representing India, Buddhaf Govindaraj will read translations from Bharathi, a national poet. Wallan Chari will perform on the violin., Korean Folk Stories Korean Folk stories will be read in English by Hannah Surh. Fol- lowing the singing of several folk songs by Korean students, Maung Mya Maung of Burma will play a guitar solo. Hawaiian students will conclude the formal part of the program with "Aloha." Social dancing will be offered from 10 p.m. until midnight. "Lullaby of Birdland," as interpreted by Johnny Harbert's combo, will be the theme of the Kappa Delta winter formal tonight. Kappa Sigma men and their dates will be migrating to the Knights of Columbus Hall for their annual formal affair tomorrow night. The Sigma Nu's will be going even "farther." They have selected an Egyptian theme for the dinner dance which will be held at their house. To Honor Pledges Zeta Beta Tau is taking the whole weekend to honor their pledges. The Washtenaw Country Club will be the site of the formal "Jankowian" dance tonight. Tomorrow evening, the ZBT house will be slightly converted in order to host a Norwegian Ski Party. Sigma Alpha Epsilon's "Winter Wonderland" dance will be held at the American Legion Hall tomorrow night. Alpha Omicron Pi will be honoring their pledges at the Union Terrace tonight, with couples dancing to the music of Bill Bottomly and his band. Blue and Silver' The Farm Cupboard will host Alpha Gamma Delta's and their dates at their "Blue and Silver" pledge formal. The Zeta Psi's have invited members of their Western Ontario chapter to attend their formal "Winter Wonderland." Other formals' this weekend will center around a Christmas and winter scheme. The houses following this plan are Beta Theta Pi, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Delta Phi, Alpha Chi Sigma, Theta Chi and Alpha Phi. 'Gambling' Parties Both Psi Omega and Trigon fraternities will be converting their houses into gambling casinos for weekend fun, while the Tau Kappa Epsilon house will become "haunted" for their informal dance to- morrow night. A "circus" costume party will be held at the Delta Chi house tomorrow night in honor of the pledges. Delta Upsilon men and their dates will be masquerading in a different way for their "Hoods Hide- away" party. Only seafaring persons will be accepted at the Sigma Chi house tomorrow night, for their "Shipwreck" party. A square dance atmosphere will prevail at the Phi Alpha Kappa house. Trim Christmas Trees Phi Rho Sigma and guests will be trimming a Christmas tree at their affair tomorrow night. Chi Omega will be having their "tree trimming" party Sunday evening. Little Club entertainment will be in the full swing again today from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Union. An annual open house in the. form of a huge Christmas party is being sponsored jointly by the1 League and Union from 2 to 4:30R p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 at the League. The League and Union have planned a gala party for all the residents of Ann Arbor, both children and adults, Universityt students, faculty, administration and their families. No admission{ will be charged. There will be something to at- tract the attention of everyone, Hazel Frank, League president ex- plained., Yuletide Contests An important event of this year's yuletide party will be a contest between all the women's resi- dences, -including dormitories, sororities and League Houses and the various men's residences-both quadrangles and fraternities. This is the first time this con- test has been held. Each women's housing unit will submit a doll and each men's resi- dence will construct a model air- plane. Dolls must be between 10 to 20 inches high. They may be pur- chased if the individual houres wish to do so. Each house is to use its ingenuity in dressing the doll. Men's housing units may design and build any style airplane they would like, however, it cannot have a motor. Winners of each of these con- tests will receive a trophy. Members of the League and Union are planning to convert every possible niche of the League into some focal point of interest. Caroling and Dancing Christmas caroling, and dancing in the Main Ballroom of the League will be part of the after- noon's holiday entertainment. Providing the music, will be! Paul Brodie and his orchestra. Other musical entertainment for the yuletide event will be the Psurfs, a group of 11 law students, who won first prize at last year's student variety show, Gulantics. They will be singing Christmas carols. For the adults there will be dis- plays donated by foreign students as well as displays of the dolls and airplanes submitted by the men's and women's residences The League itself will be decked out for the Christmas season. Out- side will be a large gaily decorated Christmas tree. There will be another huge tree in the lobby also decorated in the holiday tradition. Basketball Club Members of the WAA Bas- ketball Club will hold a prac- tice session at 4:15 p.m. today in Barbour Gymnasium.
