THE MICHIGAN DAILY" FRMAY, NOVEMBER X8.1955 THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER iS, 1955 Change Due to Wiliams, Sallade Says Seating Of Delegation Is Probleni (Continued from Page 1) In adopting other changes in convention procedure recommend- ed by Mitchell's group, the com- mittee agreed to arrange private polls of delegations, allowing roll call votes to continue by states. The time-consuming public polls will be allowed only on demand of one-third of the state's delegates. Delegates whose credentials have not been accepted by the conven-, tion will not be allowed to vote on the question of their own seating, an issue that arose in the 1952 Re- publican gathering. 1200 Delegates Nearly 1200 delegates to the 1956 convention are expectedas a result of further rulings by the committee. States will be given four bonus votes if they went Democratic in the 1952 elections or if they have elected a Demo- cratic governor or senator since. These votes will be in addition to bonuses granted for states which went Democratic in 1948. Overall effect of the decisions will be to give Northern states more representation than they would have received had bonuses been granted only for the 1952 elections, when most Democratic victories were in the South. States Allowed Delegate States will also be allowed two delegates for every vote cast at the convention. Formerly, votes alloted to congressional districts were not allowed to be split. Michigan will send a total of 140 delegates to the 1956 Demo- cratic Convention because of the election of Sen. William McNam- ara (D-Mich.). The number of delegates will be raised from the 40 votes of 1953 to 44. This al- lows for a maximum of 88 dele- gates and 52 alternates. Nationally, states will be al- lowed 1372 votes as compared with 1230 votes in 1952. They will be allowed 2744 delegates as com- pared with 1576 in 1952. NO WAITING at 114 E. Since SGC took over the hut last Spring from the old Student Legis- lature, there have been many changes made. New partitions and rearrangement of office space have apparently made facilities much more effective. The hut is patterned into three units. The front door opens to a comfortable reception room com- plete with overstuffed furniture, coffee table, and various circulars which visitors may look over while waiting. New bulletin boards separate the reception room and the conference room, where many committees have their meetings. The rear half of the building, containing desks, typewriters, and files of SGC members, is reserved for office work Over the summer the interior was painted a bright aqua color, office furniture was repainted, the bulletin boards were set up, and a sign identifying the building was erected over the front door. New fluorescent lighting brightens the building throughout. However, even with the reor- ganization, which has helped greatly in facilitating the Job of SGC,there is still much to bede- sired. Space is the big problem. Even with the aid of a conference table there is not enough room for all the meetings which are constantly in session. Many meetings are held in the Michigan Union for this reason. Little in the line of improve- ments can be expected, however, because when the Student Acti- vities Building is completed the SGC offices will be located there.
