9 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1955 Wolverines End Practice -Bring on the Bu ke es! £hu((Iin'dli'n.. WITH PHIL DOUGLIS Daily Sports Editor U DON'T LET Woody Hayes fool you! The shrewd mastermind of Ohio State's football fortunes has caused much wonderment this week, as he released injury report after injury report, barred newsmen from practice sessions, and added fuel to the myth that .Ohio State has no passing attack. Regardless of what Mr. Hayes says--you can be sure enough of one thing. If you are ohe of the 97,239 fans lucky enough to hold in your. hand a ticket to tomorrow's battle of the century, you are guaranteed a view of what is destined to be the most talked about game ,of this or any other season. Super Explosive.... OHIO STATE versus Michigan is enough to guarantee a blood and thpnder .contest-but add the Big Ten title and for Michigan a Rose Bowl bid as the rewards-and you have a super-explosive situation. Throw In a few All-American's like, "Hopalong" Cassady and Ron Kramer - add a sellout throng in the world's largest college stadium- and put it in the environment of a college campus which has been slowly simmering all week long. These are the ingredients for per- . haps the game of a lifetime. What is hoped to be the largest pep-rally in University of Michi- gan history is expected to start things off tonight-and if Michi- Sgan's Wolverines should. pull out a w............ n, the fireworks. won't stop there . .not by a long shot. But back to Mr. Hayes. The Ohio injury list has grown all week. " i, :>._._;:>;.>. : ::<:<::.t<; > Star halfback Jerry Harkrader is « r. .lost for the year with a knee injury. His top replacement Jim Roseboro is also ailing but is listed to start. If these injuries are the real thing we still should weep no m :.>. tears for Hayes. It 1s not hard to remember the last time Michigan had to deal with a reserve halfback. Just two short weeks ago, Illinois star Harry #"w *Jefferson bumped a rib-and in his place, came an untested rookie % named Bobby Mitchell. The rest FRANK ELLWOOD needs no elaboration. Mr. Mitchell .. can he pass? Was one reserve halfback Michigan would prefer to forget. Farly yesterday, the Ohio super-star Cassady was supposedly injured in an auto crackup . . . but doctors say he will play. You can almost be sure he is OK, or Hayes would have kept the whole matter quiet. Then too-there is the weather. With the definite arrival of winter yesterday-many fans are already fearing the worst. We still maintain that no matter what the weather, these teams will be evenly matched. However, long range forcasts predict partly cloudy and warmer conditions for Saturday afternoon. But looming above all is the claim that Ohio has no passing attack and relies almost compeltely on its running attack.. A Passer in the House? .... This to us seems highly improbable. True, Ohio has only com- pleted 16 passes in eight game for 158 yards.. But we arg almost sure that Hayes. has come up with some tricky pass plays to use against Michigan. After all, he does have a quarterback, one Frank Ellwood, and any Big Ten quarterback is believed to be able to at least flick the ball; to somebody under trying circumstances. And if Mr. Ellwood just isn't up to passing, certainly somebody in a school of 19,000 individuals can throw a football. What is Ben Oosterbaan doing meaziwhile? His players aren't injured. Most of his boys don't have cars, but instead drive their bikes very carefully Amid the scurry for tickets, and the constantly increasing tension, Oosterbaan's legions have been working steadily and grimly at Ferry Field. They are fired to a fever pitch for this one. We are sure of this. His team is favored by six ... but in football, this means nothing. You can be sure that the Michigan coaching staff is not sleeping soundly these nights. Up high in the Michigan Union the past few evenings, the Michigan coaching staff has been peering at movies- reel after reel of past .Ohio-Michigan games, trying to fond a fatal flaw in the Hayes system. Around the campus, wherever Michigan football players reside, they are going about life as usual-bluebooks, studying, and sleeping. But the usual fraternity house bull sessions have ceased for them, the meaningless time wasters are forgotten this week - as the Wolverines use every minute to their advantage. No Michigan team in recent years has been on such a spot. The past several years have seen important games . . . but NONE as important as this one. The real work of the week is over. The long wait begins tonight. Tomorrow afternoon about 4:00, we will know the result, BUCKEYES LAST BIG TEN DEFEAT-Tony Branoff carries the ball against Ohio State In Michigan's 1953, 20-0 victory.
