UNUSUAL FESTIVITY: 'Happy Un-Birthday Party' To Be Held at Martha Cook Union Plans Detroit Teatre ps -Daily-Hal Leeds GREEKS GATHER-Newly appointed heads of the 1955 Greek Week, Herb Schneider, IFC Ball chairman, and Meredith Hardy and Frank Vick, Greek Week co-chairmen, begin plans for the week to be held May 14 to 19. Chairmen Announced For '56 Greek Week If Alice, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit should drop in for dinner at Martha Cook Building this evening, they'd feel quite at home. Although they're accustomed to unusual festivities, Alice and her friends would admit that Martha Cook's en-masse 'Happy Un-Birth- day Party' is on a much grander scale than the one they attended in "Wonderland." The party which will celebrate the birthdays of all the house resi- dents, was an innovation last year. In past years, birthday dinners were held at the close of each month and honored those coeds whose birthdays occurred during that month. House Director's Birthday Because the birthday of Leona B. Diekema, house director of the independent womens' dormitory is in November, Martha Cook resi- dents have selected this month for the annual event. During the dinner, coeds will be seated at tables, decorated to rep- resent important dates scattered throughout the calendar year. Those women who have birth- days in February will find them- selves surrounded by the gay decor characteristic of Valentine's Day, while residents born in December will be greeted with some presea- son Christmas cheer. Tables Will Feature The tables for those who have birthdays in June will feature a theme centered around the Zodiac twins. The Martha Cook dining room will take on a festive air with decorations of colored streamers. According to general chairman, Mary Alice Coedy, the entertain- ment has also been planned around' the December to January theme, and will feature such melodies as "April Showers" and "September Song." Each woman will receive a favor, and individual-size birthday cakes topped with candles will be served as dessert. First of this semester's Union sponsored theatre trips to Detroit is scheduled for Nov. 15, 17 and 20. "Trips are usually scattered throughout the term," Joel Siegel, a member of the Union publicity committee remarked, "It is unus- ual to have three in the same week." Bizet's all time favorite "Car- men" is first on the agenda. Fea- turing Margorie Gordon and Rul- doph Petrak, the opera will be sung in French and will include a ballet. Making Detroit Debut Miss Gordon is making her De- troit debut with the New York City Opera Company. Tenor Pet- rak, a veteran with the Company, has been heard in many perform- ances. "Madam Butterfly," Puccini's popular composition, will be given for students' enjoyment, Sunday. Sung in Italian, its principal roles will be filled by tenor Barry Mor- rell and soprano Dorothy Kirsten. Miss Kirsten, well-known star of the Metropolitan, recently re- ceived high praises for her per- formance in Detroit's Sunday af- ternoon concert series. Young Tenor Making his Detroit debut as Lt. Pinkerton, Morrell has been hailed as a "sensational young tenor who has attracted a lot of attention at New York City Center." Both operas wilt appear in De- troit as a part of the city's 13th annual grand opera festival. Their casts are from the New York City Opera Company. Danny Kaye and an all-star international show will make up Thursday's entertainment. "The Danny Kaye Revue" Featuring Kaye, Senor Wences, I Events Around Campus The Cheers, The Dunhills, Mar- quis and Family and The Three Hours, the show is appropriately titled "The Danny Kaye Revue." Ventriloquist Wences has made many television appearances, while The Three Cheers are best known for their recording of "Black Den- im Trousers." Tickets for the trips are on sale now in the Union Student offices. They may be purchased from 3 to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Seigel urges all students inter- ested to buy tickets as soon as possible, since there is a limit of 100 students per show. "Last year many were disappointed," he said.
