TAKE /T AWAY AFTER':
Medical Student Fees Should
Be Reduced, Ruthven Claims

"If our doctors are making too
much-money . . take it away'
from them after, instead of be-
fore, they have made it" is the
opinion of University President
Emeritus Alexander G. Ruthven.
The retired University president
came out of retirement just long
enough to shoot some shotgun;
blasts at the economics of modern
education in an article entitled,
"Cost of Medical Education," in
the current issue of the Michigan
State Medical Journal.
"One conclusion I have reached
is that not only must our medical
schools not spend less, but they
should spend more on their pro-
grams," he said.
In urging more medical educa-
tion spending, he does not mean
that we need more buildings or

even higher salaries-but that col-
leges should charge no fees and
in other ways attempt to reduce
costs to the students.
"There are brains on both sides
of the tracks, and they should be
fully utilized in medicine. Ability
and ambition to achieve success
are not related to the economic
status of parents."
Moreover, it is not sensible to
raise medical students' fees be-
cause in practice he will earn a
handsome income. "If medical
students should pay all the cost of
their education, so should all oth-
er college graduates who are des-
tined to become wealthy automo-
bile executives, lawyers, and bank-
ers," former President Ruthven
added.

refund Given
To Employees
Of University
A total refund of $19,984 will be
distributed next month to em-
ployee-members of the University's
group insurance program.
As a result of favorable exper-
ience on losses during the July
1954-June 1955 period, each par-
ticipant is scheduled to receive an
average of between one to two
month's premium payment, Con-
troller Gilbert L. Lee Jr., said yes-
terday.
This marks the third year of
program operation that a refund
has been declared. The program
has been in effect for six years.
Both faculty and non-academic
staff who have been University
employees for at least six months
are eligible for participation in
the insurance setup.
The declared refund will be is-
