The period of history covered
by the library's contents begins
with the arrival of Columbus and
continues through the periods of
exploration, colonization by the
European powers, the Revolution,
the new federal government, ex-
pansion as far as the Mississippi
and the War of 1812.
The books and manuscripts are
carefully guarded against fire and
theft by means of piped-in heat,
locked interior doors, locked cases
and no book circulation. Exhibits
in the Main Room are open daily
to the public, but research reading
can be done only after an inter-
view with the director. Readers
also must follow regulations about
the careful handling of books by
reporting to the Librarian on their
arrival and departure.
