The Winston collection, dealing specifically with 20th century paintings and sculptures, will be on display through Nov. 27. According to Prof. Jean-Paul Slusser, curator and director of the Museum of Art, the collection is noted for its well balanced rep-C resentation of major movements in modern art, with particular em- phasis on cubism and futurism. "Portrait of Dora Maar" Included in the exhibition is one of six of the first paintings by Pablo Picasso to be brought out of Paris after its World War II oc- cupation. Entitled "Portrait of Dora Maar," this oil is signed and dated Picasso, 25 mai 41. It is on exhibit in the museum's west gal- lery. Also on display by Pablo Picasso, eminent Spanish cubist, are four works of varying mediums, includ- ing: pencil; collage, oil, sand, and pencil on cardboard; oil on canvas; and ink and wash. A feature of the Winston collec- tion deals with "Futurism," an Italian manifestation based on speed and poswer in the mechanized age. It includes also esthetic theo- ries, political hopes and aspira- tions. Various Art Media The section of the exhibition dealing with futurism is located in north gallery. Varying mediums employed by this art field include: Charcoal, oil, pencil, pastel, and crayons by Gino Severini; gouache and oil by Giacomo Balla; oil and ink by Umberto Boccioni; and gouache, pencil and crayon, crayon and tempera, by Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, and Mario Sironi, re- spectively. A striking work on exhibit is "Study of Voids," an oil by Mario DeLuigi. The Winston collectin is one of the strongest collections of modern art in the Middle West, and is still in the steady process of de- velopment. Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Winston, of Birmingham, Mich., began their collection 20 years ago. Beginning with a collection of only Michigan artists works, the Winstons grad- ually expanded their collection to include American and European works. - north gallery. Japan Leftist Diet Leader Against Arms (Continued from Page 1) Develop Two Party System Secondly, the closing of ranks within the Socialist party will have a tendency to urge the con- servatives to do likewise, bring- ing about the development of a two party system similar to that existing in Great Britain. Mr. Katsumata believes that such a conservative merger will take place within the foreseeable future, thus giving them solid con- trol of the Diet with about two thirds of the seats. The political tactics of the Socialist party call for the earliest possible dismissal of the Diet and the holding of elections, in April if practicable. The Japanese Socialist feels that the results of this election would increase the number of seats held by the Socialists in the House- of Representatives, the lower house of the Diet, from the present 156 to around 200. Cabinet Lacks Popular Support "The present Hatoyama cabinet does not enjoy genuine popularity among the people," Mr. Katsumata explained, "but came into power on the wave of reaction caused by the scandals of the former Pre- mier Shigeru Yoshida's govern- ment. This attitude on the part of the voters will show up in the next election." Should the results of the elec- tion be as predicted, a question will arise as to whether the Soc- ialist Party should attempt to take the reins of government with a slight plurality or wait until an- other election when they would hope to be returned with a clear majority. This question cannot be answered at this time, Mr. Katsu- mata added, but will have to be decided after an analysis of the political situation at the time, such as how well the conservative factions will be merged.
