i THE MICHIGAN DAILY AUSTIN COMMENTS: Inter-Group Relations Not Problem r By ETHEL KQVITZ "We don't have inter-group problems on this campus so much as we have overlooked opportun- ity," according to C. Grey Austin, a member of Lane Hall's staff. Many students become active in only one or two campus activities and never develop an understand- ing of those groups with which they have no contact, he explained. "Because of this fraternities and sororities are often misunderstood. And in the same way religious groups, foreign students and many other segments of the student body are not understood by people who never enter that aspect of Uni- versity life," Austin continued. "But almost every new effort that an individual makes to find some new experience is a step for- ward. "Panhel and Assembly recently got together on writing to foreign students before they came to the University and meeting them when they arrived. This was a new and very valuable experience for the girls." SGC Vitality Austin also praised "the new vitality that SGC has. . It is go- ing tj do a lot to create under- standing between groups because U' Engineer~ Given Award Lee E. Allgood, '56E, has been awarded $1250 first prize in the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation's nationwide competi- tion for mechanical and structural designs by engineering students. Allgood's winning design was a stamped die of welded construc- tion, suitable for low quantity pro- duction, whose cost would be 20 per cent that of a conventionally made die. meetings will be a place where general campus problems can be aired. Also, the fact that leaders of many campus activities are members of SGC will be a distinct contribution to inter-group un- derstanding." A look at the underlying purpose of a group would also do much to improve understanding, according to Austin. "People in religious activities would like to see more people do- ing that sort of work. Students must come to realize that reli- gion is not just interested in get- ting people to go to church. "In a sense one of the jobs re- ligion is trying to do is to help students to re-examine their own ideas and motivations. If students working in religious groups rea- lize that some other activities are moving in the same direction, they will understand those activities better." Potential Problem Austin also commented that though inter-group relations are not now a crucial problem, "they are a potential problem." A conference cn human rela- tions, to be held this week-end and attended by representatives from colleges in the state, will discuss what can be done to prevent group relations from becoming a cam- pus problem, Austin commented. Austin has been a member of the Lane Hall staff for four years. He was formerly with the Wesley Foundation of the University of Iowa.
