Jean Anouilh's THIEVES' CARNIVAL NEW YORK (M)-In Baltimore' last week a driver was jollying along minding his own bus when a female passenger cried: "Wait! Hold everything until I get my clothes off." The driver slammed to a stop and spun in his seat to see what was going on. Then he waited pa- tiently until the fully clothed woman finally managed to get her bundle of laundry through the rear door and off the bus. The woman apparently made it Industrial Shop To BeAvailable To 'U' Students The industrial arts shop in the University high school will be open to students on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The shop is being opened for the purpose of giving people an opportunity to develop new craft3 skills, pursue a hobby such as building a Hi-Fi unit or making Christmas presents. He emerged unhurt but the car that had hit him and thrown him over the hood into the windshield suf- fered a crumpled fender, knocked- out headlight and smashed wind- shield. Another triumph of man over machine occurred in Memphis, Tenn. . A construction elevator plunged nine stories when the cable snapped, but the occupant, who was taking a wheelbarrow of fresh cement to the top, flopped on soft cement and had a cush- ioned ride down. Young men today have abandoned this gambit, and I must say I don't understand why. Nothing is quite as effective as poetry for moving a difficult girl. What's more, poems are ridiculously easy to write. The range of subject matter is end- less. You can write a poem about a girl's hair, her eyes, her nose, her lips, her teeth, her walk, her talk, her clothes, her shoes- anything at all. Indeed, one of my most lambent love lyrics was called To Maud's Pencil Box. It went like this: In your dear little leatherette pencil box Are pencils of yellow and red, And if you don't tell me you love me soon, I'll hit you on top of the head. Honesty compels me to admit that this poem fell short of success. Nothing daunted, I wrote another one. This time I pulled a switch; I threatened myself instead of Maud. SECOND HAND records. Few of the Iowa fans who arrive this Friday and Sat- urday will remember the 1901-1902 series between the two teams-and those who do remember would rather forget. The great 1901 team, which held their oppo- nents scoreless throughout the season while scoring 550 points themselves, routed Iowa that year 50-0, but that was just a preview of the year to come . . . when the Hawkeyes fell 107-0. KYER FACTS A good reputation for quality work does not come over. night. Kyer Model Laundry has been serving Michigan men for over 30 years. KYER MODEL LAUNDRY AND CLEANERS My heart doth cease its beating. My spleen uncoils and warps. My liver stops secreting. Soon I needs be a corpse. When this heart-rending ballad failed to move Maud, I could only conclude that she was cruel and heartless and that I was better off without her. Accordingly, I took back my Hi-Y pin, bid her adieu, and have not clapped eyes upon her since. Last I heard of her, she was in North Scituate, Rhode Island, working as a clam sorter. tet'6 t1it&WflitrePe it wvuttahvendd.d f ihe-adtbeettdrd{{ed But I did not mourn Maud long, for after Maud came Doris- Doris of the laughing eyes, Doris of the shimmering hair, Doris of the golden tibiae! Within moments of meeting her, I whipped up a torrent of trochaic tetrameter: Oh, my sweet and dulcet Doris! You're gentle as a Philip Morris, With its mild and rich tobacco And its white and scarlet pack-o, Both in regular and king-size. Doris, tell me please your ring size. 814 S. State 1302 S.
