News AND BACK Religious Experience Calls Minister to Preach Gospel ao4 $8.93' REV. JOHN HOWARD ... No ordinary man By ERNEST THEODOSSIN Traditionally, the 24-hour-a- day job of resident hospital chap- lain means being ready at any time to bring religious inspiration to a sick or dying patient. This is a job for no ordinary man. And Rev. John R. Howard, who has been appointed assistant resi- dent chaplain at University Hos- pital for one year of training, is no ordinary man. To his patients he trys to bring some of the faith and devotion he has found in his calling, WUERTH For "dress up" occasions, the Wesboro Style W1085 $7.95* 3 pairI SBOR wardbe for only $23!. as advertised in &quL%& REI NetpfM WeeboroDres chart. AUDIE MURPHY SATURDAY "The Return of Jack Slade" MONDAY Mc wA f 44 ONDAY MONDAY MONDAY YOUR STUDENT DIRECTORY ON SALE MONDAY ON CAMPUS He Faced anr Empire of Barbed-wire and Bullets! - KIRK DOUGLAS JEANNE CRAIN CLAIRE TREVOR 4~rn~otf In 1943, the Methodist minister was a business administration graduate from a Georgia univers- ity. With the war in full swing, he began training for and became a licensed pilot with a commercial and instructor's rating. After the war, the soft-spoken Southerner started a dealership for a large automobile company, married and was "raising a fam- ily" for five years-apparently settled down-when he had a "re- ligious experience." As he puts it, speaking rather haltingly, "I was responsible for my poor choices in life, which in- volved a family relationship that was not according to the Christ- ian teachings." The result: his home and family torn apart by a divorce and a real need to reevaluate life. What the minister found was the "redemptive love of Jesus Christ. I came to experience in some measure what the death of Christ for all mankind meant." Felt Real Calling The balding minister speaks of his religious experience freely, with only a desire not to hurt the other individuals involved. During his first year in the theological seminary at Atlanta, Georgia's, Emory University, he met his pre- sent wife and they were married in 1953. After his second marriage, the minister, who still keeps a faint Southern drawl, went with his wife to Elgin State- Hospital at Elgin, Ill. They both worked there in the summer of 1953. Now assisting Rev. Malcolm Bal- linger in the chaplaincy and clin- ical pastoral training programs at the University Hospital, Mr. How- ard's training is expected to pre- pare him for a chaplain-supervis- ory post.d The minister, thirtyish and ex- hibiting obvious human under- standing, is doing the work he enjoys best. Mr. Howard works with his wife as a team, and their present hope is that they can give more freely of the joint religious services in the future.
