The ability of Minnesota's bat- tered ends to recover from injur- ies by game time will decide to a large degree the chances of the Gophers in their tussle with Illi- nois. Four of the six wingmen who participated in last week's 18-7 conquest of Northwestern were victims of injuries which com- pletely depleted Warmath's stock of right ends. They are Franz 9 I Read Daily Classifieds THE STARTING TODAY I I Matinees 50c Eyes. & Sun. 80c Dial NO 2-2513 Koeneke, Jon Jelacic, and Starch Hubbard. Jelacie Out Indefinitely Jelacic, promising 220-pound sophomore who made a sensa- tional pass grab to set up Minnes- ota's second touchdown, is out in- definitely with a shoulder separ- ation. Koeneke missed practice Monday and Tuesday because of a badly bruised hip. His chances of starting against the Illini are slim. Hubbard is nursing a rib separation. To add to Warmath's end prob- lems, Tom Juhl, junior right end who has performed brilliantly for the Gophers on offense and de- fense to date this season came up with a charlie horse. He had to observe from the sidelines as his teammates practiced early this week. Guard, Fullback Moved Because of this wholesale de- pletion of end talent the Minn- esota coaching staff decided to move Perry Gehring, soph reserve at left guard, and Jerry Eisen- berg, reserve fullback,.to end pos- itions where they worked for the past week. In the shuffle of ends necessi- tated by these injuries Bob Sch- midt, rangy sophomore from Rochester, moved from left end to right end where he will likely be a starter Saturday unless Koeneke makes a surprising recovery. On the brighter side, Shorty Cochran, veteran right halfback who has been sidelined for 10 days with a shoulder separation, has been working out lightly this week. There is a remote possibility that he may be ready for action against the Illini. Yackel Out Ken Yackel, No. 1 fullback until he suffered a fracture of the transverse process in practice, last week, will miss the game. Illinois will send the nation's second best offense against the Gophers and Coach Ray Eliot is hopeful that his young charges will eliminate mistakes which have caused that potent attack to stall near the goal line. In three games, the Illini have run 214 plays from scrimmage to amass a total of 1,241 yards, an average of 414 per game. Worked Hard "That illustrates just how much our mistakes have hurt us," Eliot said. "We've worked hard this week to eliminate some of these mechanical errors and perhaps we can put together a good game soon."
