SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1,1955 THE MICHIGAN DAILY + Cinema quild Saturday at 7 and 9 Sunday at 8 only A SONG TO REMEMBER in TECHNICOLOR with (OR NEL WILDE PAUL MUNI MERLE OBERON ARCHITECTURE AUDITORIUM 50c Gov. Williams Cancels Alabama Dinner Speech Lansing UP) - A Birmingham, Ala. city ordinance barring Ne- groes from dining in public with whites yesterday caused Gov. G. Mennen Williams to cancel a speaking engagement there. Gov. Williams said when he ac- cepted an invitation to deliver the main address at the Alabama Jefferson - Jackson Day dinner Oct. 5 he did not know of the ord- inance. He said that when he learned of it he told Alabama Democratic leaders that he could not "in good conscience" attend the meeting and that "certain Alabama peo- ple" attempted to remove the ob- stacle by moving the dinner to some other city where there would be no legal bar to Negroes attending. "It now appears,"'Williams said, "that ittis too late to change the site of the dinner. I am advised that the dinner committee is will- ing to sell tickets to all applicants regardless of race. But the Birm- ingham ordnance cannot be sus- pended and there would be no as- surance that it might not be en- forced afiainst any Negro Demo- crat who actually attended." The governor said "The Ala- bama people, from my good friend Gov. Folsom on down, have been very cooperative, and I feel sure that this unfortunate situation was entirely, unintentional on their part." Library Planned For Ann Arbor A new $710,000 public library was planned yesterday by the Ann Arbor Board of Education. Costs are to be underwritten by the sale to the University where the present library is housed. Funds were pledged in the bard's building fund report. Cinema Guild Petitions for organizational sponsorship of SGC Cinema Guild are now available in the quonset hut. Petitions should be returned by Oct. 10. Interviewing will be held on Oct. 27.
